FYI – OWF has some Apex in stock for sale. It appears to be 6oz per sq yard and 77" in width @ $18.95 per yard. They had 6 yards left when I called and will have another order in on March 11th.
Mar 8, 2011 at 6:17 pm #1706346Its in stock at thruhiker now. Fyi.
Mar 8, 2011 at 6:45 pm #1706361thruhiker sais Apex is 0.82 clo/oz/yd2 $16 per yard x 60 inches
Seattle Fabric says Primaloft One is 0.84 clo/oz/yd2 (actually they say 0.084 col per weight but I'm way extrapolating by saying they meant 0.84) $12/yd (60 inches)
primaloft.com says primaloft one is .92 clo/oz/yd2
Based on that I think primaloft one would be better
Mar 8, 2011 at 7:09 pm #1706370Primaloft requires quilting where climashield doesn't. For me that factors into what makes one "better" than another.

I made a couple projects from pre-quilted PL1 bought from Thru-Hiker a few years ago, it was quilted at 6" intervals. Ayce makes it a point to be informed so I'm assuming that is what the manufacturer wants.
In both directions?
No
I believe Primaloft Sport does not require quilting?
Quilting at 24" intervals is recommended for large panels of Primaloft Sport. I've always assumed that would be in both directions. That's a factor in quilts but rarely comes into play in clothing, maybe on the backs of larger sized pullovers. I've tended to quilt a tiny bit more aggressively than that … 18"
Mar 9, 2011 at 3:29 am #1706467IIRC, PL1 is .84 and Apex (and the older XP) is .82
Climashield doesn't drape as well as Primaloft but also doesn't require quilting. IMO, Climashield makes more sense for quilts and Primaloft is better for garments.

I will now have to ponder what to use in my next project.
Mar 9, 2011 at 7:42 pm #1706808I'll lay money that Climashield Apex will have a more durable loft than Primaloft Sport.
With synthetic insulation Loft Retention is the Achilles heel. Any synthetic insulation that wins in this category wins big.
