Hi all, I'm new to these forums but have often read posts. I just want to thank everyone for all the shared information first off. There seems to be a great community here.

I stopped by a pawn shop today and saw a set of Leki super Makalu hiking poles for $45 and they're in great condition. I injured my ankles pretty good about a year ago, and am hoping these will help me to keep from constantly rolling the ankles on trails.

Anyone familiar with these poles? Think this is a good price? I went to the manufacturers website and saw there is a lifetime warranty on the poles which is a plus, not sure though if this is extended to me if I bought them used. Anyone know about that?

Thanks!

Joshua,

Sounds like a deal to me.

I have ones that are a few years old and are similar with three sections and antishock, but I don't have the plastic/foam handles and I paid about $150.00 for mine.

They are not the lightest out there, but they are good poles…if it were me, I would get them at that price.

I am sure that I have put 300-400 miles on my poles and they are still going strong.

Oddly, the only damage that I have is that one of the ends of one sections has a crack in it….sure it would be covered under warranty, but has not effected the use of the pole.

Bottom line, great deal…value for money.

If you want something lighter, than you need to go carbon, but prepare to pay dearly and use them gently.

Thanks alot for the input. I think I'm gonna go get them now. I considered carbon, but I'm a bigger Guy, and quite clumsy, so they likely wouldn't last me too long.

Good news is I have a stack of old DVDs (10) I was going to sell in a garage sale, but if I put them towards these poles I can get them for about $5. Bonus!

Thanks again for the input.

Yup, like Tony, I also had these poles. Mine were the super makalu coretec PA with antishock lite. I put in some pretty good mileage on them, and eventually sold them here on the forums. Good sturdy poles, and a great way to get introduced when they are sold at that price

Hey Joshua,

I bet you are still covered by Leki's lifetime warranty. They certainly never asked me any questions related to my ownership when I dealt with them. They have pretty awesome customer service.

I inquired about whether there was a way to convert my slipping twist lock carbon poles to speedlocks (both my husband and I had these poles, and after a year and a half of constant use, were failing to lock well) and they immediately offered to send me brand new versions of the poles with speedlocks at no additional cost, other than the cost to ship my 2 sets of poles to them (10$ for two new sets of poles?? No problem!)

I would buy them. The makalu has the thicker aluminum as well for trenching or whatever. It is a good tool to have and my buddy swears by them. They're probably the most durable pole you'll find so buying them used at that price seems like a deal to me.

Good to know about the warranty, thanks. I did pick them up, and after giving the pawn shop 12 old DVDs, they cost me $8. :) They are the ones with cork handles, and have some triple spring feature. They also had the rubber covers on the tips & really look barely used at all. I think I got a good deal, thanks again for all the feedback which helped me make a quick but good decision.
