Just got a tarptent and rather than use poles I think I will try out a set of Trekking Poles.

Anybody have any suggestions for the best, lightest set that can be had for under $75?

Thanks?

Black Diamond does the trick. Dunno about lighter options. Most are fixed length poles

$75 is light for a high quality carbon pole like Black Diamond or Gossamer Gear. You have to trade weight for cost. Pay a little more and get GG LT4.

I elected to go with the LT3s instead. I was more concerned about weight than adjustability. You can't beat Gossamer Gear poles with a stick.

I just picked up a new pair of Komperdell poles off of Sierra Trading Post for $50 three weeks ago, might still be there. I will never go back to the twist lock system. I don't know how I went so many years without flick locks.

What model tarptent? Some require pole lengths of 135cm or more so make sure you get a model that is long enough.

I picked up a pair of Black Diamond Trail Ergo Cork Aluminum poles on sale for $70 shipped a few weeks ago to try out. A quick search online comes up with one retailer for $73 shipped. They have not been used yet but for the price I am happy with what I got. They weigh about 9oz each though.

Being that they are my first pair, I wanted something relatively light but rugged and reliable (flick locks, aluminum, cork grips…). If they work out well I know I can always upgrade to lighter LT4s and have a spare pair if someone needed some.

You should also take a look at Fizan Compact poles. Very affordable ($60-70), lightweight (158 gram/pole) and adjustable. I'm planning on buying a pair myself pretty soon.

The tarp tent is a Rainshadow 2 which according the manual takes at least 48 inch poles but can be raised a little from there. I am looking for adjustable poles.

Thanks for the good suggestions and I will take a look at them. I did not know there were other options available besides the "twist" to shrink method. I take it this can be problematic?

Jason Klass has an entry about this. I found some carbon golf shafts on ebay, 4 for $12. Jann's netcraft has EVA foam fore grips (5/8" interior diameter for most shafts) for like $4 each. Leki tips at REI for $13.

I ended up paying about $50 for two pair of 4.4oz 47" trekking poles.

If you're super tall you can get plastic golf club shaft extenders, or if you're short, you can trim them down…

(edit: sorry didnt see you wanted adjustable)
