Here is a pack I made for my sister. It was made as an alpine pack. Hip belt is removable. Sleeve for bivy pad with zippered closure flap.

It is made from x-pac from rockywoods and 200d oxford for extension collar and pad sleeve. Double layer bottom.

Shoulder straps padded with 3/8" foam, hipbelt padded with 1/4" foam

Pack weighs 23.25oz / 659g including the hipbelt and hipbelt pocket.

3-fold bivy pad (18"x29"x1/4") weighs 3.5oz / 101g

Super nice!

I'm making an xpac pack right now. What kind of foam did you use? Are those bartacks on the shoulder straps going straight through the foam? Did you have any problems with that? My orange rockywoods xpac isn't the same as the gray xpac. Is the green and the gray the same?

I'd also be into seeing more photos!

Stick some kind of aluminum stays with that and I'd be tempted to ask how much you'd charge!

I'm tempted to ask how much anyways….. :)

Thanks

The volume is around 35l, I will try to remember to post actual dimensions.

The green x-pac is lighter weight then the gray. The gray is pretty burly fabric.

The foam is a microcell foam.
The stitching does go through the foam.

The first pack I made completely from scratch I was not able to stitch through the foam and I had problems with the foam shifting within the strap. Now I prefer to lock the foam in place with stitching.

I have an industrial needle feed/ walking foot machine. It sews through anything put under its foot. The pack is sewn with size 92 thread.

I will post the other pics I have tomorrow, unfortunately I mailed it off today to my sister so I can't get more pics.

I made a similar pack as a prototype, out of 500d cordura. The prototype I sized as a medium for me, my sisters is a small. If you wanted a specific pic I could take one of my prototype and post it.

I have been experimenting with a removable frame sheet and aluminum stay system, to work with the bivy pad. I posted my initial trial in a different thread but here is one pic.

I love sewing gear!

Just out of curiosity (because I'm supposed to be saving for my wedding not backpacking gear!!)….. what would you charge for something like this? I really like the clean, bright look of the pack. I do understand if you'd rather not post a price.

Travis,
I will figure it out and let you know.

And… Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!
Thanks

Thanks Chris.

We've decided to hike and packraft Isle Royale for our honeymoon this summer! We're buying Alpacka rafts as part of our wedding gift to ourselves.

"The volume is around 35l"

Is there a digit missing here? Are these cubic inches?

Daryl, I think the 35l means 35 liters. I could be wrong though.

Chris, great job on the pack, it look really nice! Is the hip belt pocket removable? Nice work!

Thanks for the kind words

The hipbelt pocket is removable, I am still working on a better design. I tried having a pocket sewn directly to the hip belt but it really limits what you can put in it due to the belt curving around your hip. With a removable pocket, while it does bounce a little more, is much easier to get items in and out of. Just my experience.

The pack was made to have an 18" backpanel (bottom of pack to point where shoulder straps attach)

The dimensions –
10.5" wide (both front and back)
sides at bottom are 6.5" wide and 22" up they are 7.5" wide
height is 22" for main pack body
With extension collar 31"

Apparently I posted all the pics I have, I can have my sis send me some more after she gets it.
