For the last 10 years I've been wearing an army surplus OD XL wool/nylon field shirt.
It's heavy, but beautifully warm, fits well into my layering and is what I consider an essential piece of gear.
I can't find them locally anymore. I really need the XL to permit layering, and the only ones I can find locally or online (!) are the larges.
Anyone know of a source for these?
Thanks,
Stahl

I think I know what you mean. Kind of a soft wool? It would be dated to about 1970.

I've seen a scant few of them left around. Your best bet is to look at an surplus store near a large U.S. army base.

When I was in South Korea, there were plenty of these that were "leaving" the U.S. army bases and showing up in the village.

I'm not surprised they left, they last forever, you're right about the soft wool and gosh they're warm. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled. I saw one on a Ebay clone (Etsy) and was too chicken to bid on it, and the only other one I could find was going for 75$.

I wish I knew someone in the military to cultivate.
I'll keep looking.

Some of the oldtimers were issued that kind of field clothing when they arrived for duty in South Korea, but then they turned it back in when they left. The U.S. Army has transitioned into fighting wars in tan sandy places now, so the old green stuff didn't make the cut.

I didn't like it because it was scratchy.

Marc's suggestion looks about as close as you can get to the Army version.

I guess unsurprisingly, I had ordered that one late last night after a fruitless net search for several hours for the army surplus item. It does look similar and should be just as functional. I'd hoped for army surplus pricing, but my local army navy guy told me that the XL simply wasn't available anymore anywhere and I was forced to agree with him after I looked.
Thanks for the replies,
If anyone's interested, I'll provide feedback on it after it arrives.
