Does anyone have an practical way to clip a headlamp on a sternum strap or a belt. I have a reoccurring night hike every Wednesday near Auburn CA with my hiking group. Most of us wear headlamps for navigation up a 40 degree hill and to scare off the Black Bears and Mountain Lions. I like the Petzl Tikka XP2, but the darn thing reflects in my glasses unless I wear a ball cap, which I don't like to do at night. I'd rather not cut the strap off the Tikka to attach a longer strap. Some of the ladies in our group are skinny enough to use the default headlamp headband around their waist, but not me. If I can't figure out a practical way to do it, I am thinking of buying either

but I'd rather not spend the money if I don't have to!

Petzl makes an accessory kit called the Adapt that may do the trick for you. I got it in order to mount my headlamp on the waist strap of my pack and it has worked well for me.

I was able to open the strap up to its largest size and fit it over my shoulders and chest and wear it around my waist. For reference, I'm about a 43" chest and 33" waist.

If you can't fit the headlamp strap around your chest and you can't find a way to add a longer strap, could you solve the reflection issue by just adding some black electrical tape to the bottom of the headlamp to block the downward light from reflecting off your glasses?

I know on my Tikka, a lot of light escapes from the housing and shines straight downward whereas the main beam of light from the lamp shines out in front of me. The light that escapes and points downward is annoying to me when running at night, I could only imagine how bad it would be if it was also reflecting off of glasses.

I use black gaffer tape to block light from the bottom of my Tikka Plus 2 housing. Gaffer tape is a little better than other options because it doesn't slide around when things get hot, and it doesn't leave as much sticky residue. Pro photo/video places stock gaffer tape.

The transparent housing in these headlamps is a design flaw resulting from emphasizing appearance and market appeal over functionality.

If the housing is the issue, tape it off or paint it so it doesn't pipe light into your glasses. My Petzl Remix has diagonal cuts in the strap mounts, so you can remove the strap and it will go on my sternum strap easily (thanks for the idea!) It should be easy to make the same sort of cuts in the mount on any headlamp, with caveats.

Easiest solution might be to remove the current stap (can be done non-destructively in seconds) and thread it onto a webbing belt of the correct length. The only thing you'd need to do is keep the buckle off-center so the light centered.

A lot of runners and night hikers report they prefer the light lower to better define the ground surface. My hesitation is it seems to bounce more and of course, doesn't turn with my head.

Cheers,

Rick
