should arrive in a few days, at worse they'll be nice for wearing under jeans, which in the current below freezing temps in Boston should be nice, hopefully warmer than the Cap1's I currently use.

Actually, all of the non-wool base layers are on sale- the lightweight (Paradise) stuff is in the clearance section, and the midweight and expedition weight stuff is 50% in the regular section. Including the Bat Hang Hoodie- I’ve heard nice things about it here and elsewhere, specifically as an alternative to the Patagonia R1 Hoody. At 50% off, they’re $50, they’re especially appealing. :)

First Ascent – Men’s Base Layers
First Ascent – Women’s Base Layers

In a recent 30% off sale, I bought a set of wool base layers- I’m really liking them so far. One of the things that drive me nuts with base layers from a lot of companies is that their base layers are too long on my shortish legs, causing them to bunch up. I’d be open to losing 1/2″ off of the FA merino bottoms, but it’s a lot better than most of the long underwear I’ve tried over the years.

Thanks for sharing!

I bought the FA merino top recently and was disappointed. The sleeves are too short to use the thumbholes properly and the zipper is too short for good venting. I should have waited for the Ibex sale going on now and bought another hooded Indie.

@Will – It's all about what fits you- when you know what works well for you sometimes it pays to stick with it, eh? :) I'm happy with how the FA merino top fits- sleeve length is good, and the zipper goes down as far as the other stuff (merino or otherwise) I've had from Gander Mountain, Smartwool, Patagonia or Arc'teryx. Longer than some of them. Mind you, I've only had 1/4 zip base layers, never had a 1/2 zip or 3/4 zip.

Thumb holes are good for me- if the sleeves were any longer, I'd be annoyed by it, especially considering that the cuffs don't have a spandex-using cuff to keep them from flopping down. FYI, I'm 5'11".

Nice thing about EB is that you can take it to one of their stores and return it. Obviously, some folks live places without an EB store, but they're plentiful around the US at least. I'd have no qualms about that if I bought it, tried it on and found that it was lacking- unlike build quality issues, it'd be obvious the first time you try it on that the sleeves are short on you and the zipper isn't deep enough. Take the refund and get your Indie! :)

By appearances, I thought the Paradise was a lightweight top… But I see now that it's 9+ oz. What kind of material is it?

if im not mistaken all these are the same material as the patagonia r1's. polartech powerdry? if so its a pretty good deal!

must be mislabeled. that is almost the weight for their heavyweight expedition 1/4 zip. the midweight zip which is heavier fabric than the paradise layer (but lacking thumbloops) is only 6.1oz. But the kicker is that if you look at the weight of the paradise pants they only weigh 3.8oz. i will have one on monday, so will report back, but am betting the paradise top is around 5oz or less.

@Jason – Yup, it is Power Dry. I don't know if the weight of the material is the same as the R1, but I'm guessing the Expedition base layer is the same weight.

I've seen good reviews here and elsewhere, so it does seem like a pretty good deal. I've held off so far, meaning to take a look in store first to see what they have- not in the mood to spend another $12 on S/H for a couple base layers. They do have free ship to store, but you have to go into the store to make the order. Interested in hearing what impressions are like.

FYI, if you use FEB20 you get 20% off your entire order. Good until Feb 24th.

My local store had the mid weight quarter zips on sale for $15 each. Snagged two. They only had small, (I am usually a medium) so these fit snug… but for that price you really can't beat it.

First impression… very stretchy! They have similar gridded fleece as the revered R1 pullover… but I would say that it is not as thick of a fleece. It is probably almost half the thickness. Great for active pursuits.

Good to hear! I'll have to pop into the store and see if they have any one sale. IIRC, the Expedition weight FA base layer would be the same/similar as the R1- the midweight, etc should definitely be lighter.

guess what….it is 9oz+ for the paradise. wow. i think the midweight stuff is a lot better/lighter but not treated with anti stink.

just 85 poly and 15% spandex for the paradise. very soft though.
