Hi there,
I was just wondering if anyone else has had a problem with fuel leaking from a Platypus. I have tried two of the smaller Platypus bottles with three different red spout caps to hold fuel and I keep getting a leak! I can’t find where the leaks are but after a walk there is always a strong smell of meths and a certain amount in the plastic bag (which I have started using to stop it getting everywhere.
Any ideas?

I had the same leaking problem with the lil nipper and the red caps, that BPL sells. I tracked the leak down to the red caps not sealing tight, so I switched back to the original cap. It’s a little harder to pour without spilling, but it doesn’t leak in your pack anymore.

Sometimes the red caps don’t seat fully because the bottom of the cap hits the platy. This can be fixed by putting a piece of sandpaper on a table and sanding a bit of the bottom of the red cap off.

This improves things, but I still find that if I squeeze the platy I get leaking in the cap between the cap and spout sections.

try using PTFE tape, or plumbers thread tape on the threads to get a better seal… wonder how PTFE reacts with ETOH?

Plastics are funny. Some work well with alcohol and not with white gas or kero, and some the other way around.

But a good trick which does work is to find a nitrile or Viton O-ring of the right size and to slip it into the cap. The O-rings will seal.

I have done this with the red nalgene fuel bottles. They are compatible with white gas and kero, but putting kero in them makes the lid very hard to tighten. Not sure why. The kero does not damage the plastic. But the O-rings made them seal very well.

Mind you, now I use canisters.

I had the same problem with the Lil Nippers I bought from BPL and all of the red caps leaked. I now use a small soda bottle instead.
