I APOLOGIZE FOR THE LENGTHY LIST'S – IF YOU READ LONG ENOUGH TO GET TO THE END YOU'RE AN AWESOME PERSON :-)
Greetings – wanted a bit of feedback or thoughts in general to ease my overworked mind regarding all the gear I've got picked out from among my camping stuff for this trip…just a little background regarding me as a hiker:
1. 6'1" lanky guy with 32" waist and bony hips that need a lot of comfy padding – as do my shoulders from a prior neck/shoulder injury years ago. I've found that I get sore ASIS's (anterior superior iliac spine – small bony front part of your hip bone) if the backpack hip belts don't have enough padding for the weight. And I've noticed that my neck/ shoulder blade will get sore if too much bag weight is carried on them – more weight on hips = better, comfy hip and shoulder pads = better.(even if heavier pack wt)..
2. I've currently got the MLD Exodus (large) which is a sweet bag (excellent shoulder straps), and the Osprey Exos 56 (medium) which is good – but a bit uncomfortable on my bony hips with the limited padding in the front of the hipbelt — so I'm wondering if perhaps I should sell the Exos and try the ULA Circuit or Granite Gear pack with a stay system and "comfy" hipbelt (from what I've heard on this forum and others) and if that would be better on the hip – weight-shoulder -comfy thing arena – at least for the winter start (4 wks till whenever mother nature gives the east coast a break..) then possibly move back to the MLD……..PLEASE – take a browse over the list's below (first is Winter (cold weather start) list , and the second is Summer (whenever it gets hot I'll swap/ship the stuff).
2.5 I'll be planning of only having 2 water bottles at most full – water bag for getting just at camp or if needed, and usually 3 days of food – at most 5 days food (2 – 2.5 lbs /day = 10 – 12.5lbs food) = about 6-7lbs food and 2-4 lbs water usually carried..
3. Let it be known – that I have sold my outdated heavy backpackers nightmare stuff (my old set weighed 27.5lbs carried base weight – and add 5 days of food and the days water = 42lbs carried…I'm in pain just thinking about it..) and have NOT yet fully tried this new set-up (other than 8 hr day / overnight hikes) — hence my desire for input. I DO plan on mostly tent camping – not really interested in the Shelter's all that much)
4. I've carried those 42lbs for a week long trip with a daily average of 14 miles over 2 low mountain ranges — my desire is to comfortably do 16-20mile days with this new set-up on the A.T— and I would put my fitness level at above average to high (triathlons, trail running, etc. etc….I wear lots of spandex)
4. Finally – just in terms of the input – I'm taking TP, I'm not swapping pack belt buckles, I'm not cutting off excess straps, I'm bringing the FULL 3oz. of AM (probably should just use Bleach drops in winter since it doesn't have a time increase with colder water like AM does – and I'll have my Frontier Pro as an on the go drink option). …. :-P
