Ok, so I was cruising the thrift stores and came across an Eddie Bauer down jacket. It fit me pretty perfectly, if a little bit short, but I talked myself out of it. It needed a good wash, but felt pretty nice otherwise. I instantly got a little warmer just wearing it for a minute or so. It's pretty similar to the jacket seen in the photo from the 1975 ad here:

It's at least old enough to have the old black and gold tag on the inside.

So I put it to you, would you, in a similar situation, buy it for 30 bucks?

I've seen (and bought one for a fried) both E. Bauer & LL Bean down vests & jackets for less @ Goodwill, especially on their sale days.

That said, if on a budget and it's the best deal you've found, and you're set on down, then $30 is hard to beat!!!!

What is the outer fabric? To put it in perspective I have an EB expedition nylon down jacket from the 70's that was about $125 back then on sale with a double layer of down. Heavy nylon, lots of cargo pockets. But it has stood up to roaring fires and sparks just fine.I use it for car camping and when I have to do outdoor machinery tasks in winter (mild in Oregon). This summer My wife daughter and I bought brand new 650 down jackets at the EB outlet in Newport for $25 a piece. Those are our in town and base-camp jackets. Plus we now have 3 First Ascent jackets for $45 a piece. Those are our backpacking only jackets because the shell material is thin and could easily produce holes when exposed to a campfire.. And for sub zero survival like stranded in the car for a day both jackets layered together.

Dangit, where do you people live? I'm always hearing about finding nice merino wool sweaters at the thrift store for 5 bucks and down jackets at garage sales and outlets for a steal. I'm in Texas and just seeing a down jacket in a thrift store was pretty amazing.

As far as the fabric goes, I couldn't really tell. The tag that would have told me what it was made of was well faded. It definitely wasn't any sort of UL type material. Could have been nylon but definitely would have stood up to campfire mishaps. Another reason I passed on it at the time. Just seemed sort of heavy. Not overly heavy, just not light by today's standards.

If anything, I thought it would make a good town jacket. I don't really have one at the moment. Even in the snow and ice and temps in the teens lately, I've been getting by outside with a merino base layer, t-shirt and a sweatshirt over that.
