I noticed that Keen has started making trail running/hiking shoes that feature a eVent fabric. Has anyone tried a pair of the Ochoas or Targhees. They certainly look interesting, and purportedly sport a large toebox, which I have appreciated in Montrail shoes.

The eVent membrane might help overcome some of the breathability limitations of other XCR shoes I have hiked in.

The Targhee IIs (16.1 oz) seem to be geared toward hiking, and the Ochoas(13.6 oz) runnning.

Keen recently sent me a pair of their new leather hybrid sneakers…obviously not close to the trail runners…but the general design approach I would imagine is similar. The toe box is just that…very boxy (squarelike) and roomy. I have a wide foot, and these shoes are lightweight and very comfortable. I might look at the eVent shoes for next years trip to wet environs…as goretex makes me sweat!

I have had two pairs of the Targhees. They fit wonderfully and the waterproofing worked very well.

In the first pair the cloth in the heel area of the collar on the left shoe wore through in less than 100 miles. I tried various methods of repair to no avail. I got blisters on the back of my heel, caused by the rough area.

On the second pair the stylish “tabs”, where the sole wrapped up on the side of the shoe, (aimed forward where they take a beating) came unglued after about 50 miles of trail hiking. I cleaned and reglued them two times and finally gave up.

I wear serious orthodics due to plantar fascitis and have trouble finding a shoe that will take the insert and still have room for my high arches. With their big toe box, these shoes fit really well and were very comfortable right out of the box. I wish they were as well made as some other brands.

Dennis…
I recommend that you contact Keen regarding any kind of lack of durability where it fell short of normal. I had a pair of sandals that, as a co., they realized they had an issue with durability. They allowed me to choose any shoe I wanted and sent me a pair. Great customer service…which is probably especially important as they hone their ability to transfer design into great products.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I will have to try a pair for my next hike in two weeks.
