I’ve been interested in the tarptents and similar designs (HS Tarptents, Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo, etc.), especially the new HS Contrail, that have the ventilation mesh around the bottom edge of the tent. Having seen pictures only, I’m not sure how the mesh actually connects from the floor to fly. Although I realize these are not four-season tents, I hope to do some occasional camping in midwest moderate snow conditions and I’m wondering two things (leaving aside the staking issue):
1) Do these designs shed light to moderate snow satisfactorily (I think I saw a picture on one of the threads of a Lunar Solo pitched in very heavy and blowing snow), and
2) In bathtub mode with the fly pitched close to the ground, does the mesh stay up out of the snow or does it sag into snow. If it lays in snow, it would seem that the mesh could become caked with snow and even ice and be very difficult to clean off and pack as well as adding to the possibility of damaging the mesh.
Any thoughts on useability of these tents in winter would be appreciated.
