So my wife and I are in the market for a couples quilt arrangement. I’ve been attached to the idea of making a couples quilt for quite some time but my wife keeps telling me that I should just go ahead and buy one. So I’ve been looking at Nunatak’s offerings. The dual arc alpinist immediately caught my eye but by the time I make the adjustment’s I need (I’m 6’7″) the price is close to $700. That’s a bit too much for my current budget, although I’ve heard great things about it. My question is whether or not anyone has used a custom Backcountry Blanket as a couples quilt and what it’s like. My wife and I enjoy hiking late into the fall and on mild winter nights (i.e. 20’s), is this beyond the real world capabilities of this quilt? (I realize an answer to this is based on 100 variables but any feedback is great) Anyone found anything else they like better? I’m open for any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Shane,

While I’ve never tried the Backcountry Quilt, I have recently finished sewing a Ray-Way 2 person deluxe quilt and am quite pleased with how it came out. Ray’s instructions are really easy to follow and at around $100 (including the Alpine Upgrade) you’d save some considerable cash! If you’re set on buying one, you may want to also check out the Jack’s R Better Biker Quilt. It’s actually a bit bigger (84″ x 64″)than the largest Nunatak quilt (76″ x 61″)and the weight is almost the same. The JRB quilt is about half as much as the Nunatak. (Note – I have no relationship with JRB other than I’m a fan of their products.) I don’t believe that the JRB quilt has quite as much insulation as the Nunatak, but with the money you saved you could easily invest in some high-loft insulation for you and your wife that would allow you to take the quilt into colder conditions.

Knew I should’ve checked the JRB site first! They have a new offering called the Mt Rogers Quilt that looks even more promissing than the Biker Quilt AND has 2.5 inches of loft. Great price too!

Thanks so much for the response! I’m pretty sure that the Mt. Rogers is what we will go for. I’ll be sure and post a review. The guy at Jack’s R Better says that they should have a new flap system that weighs around 1 oz and slips under the sleeping pad in a couple of weeks. He also said that they would have some type of draft flap for between the shoulders if the quilt is used for two persons. Sounds like quite a deal at around $230! We’ll see how it goes. Thanks again.
