Howdy, all! After a series of long and cold trips, I’ve invested in a WM Megalite sleeping bag…and could just not be happier. Totally thrilled. One trip with temps below 30° F in the morning justified the cost.
However, I’m finding that even with the Megalite, I’m considering a bag liner so I can cut down the weight of additional insulation layers. Normally I can wear my merino wool sleepwear and a DriClime windshirt/jacket and be pretty toasty…but when temps dip further I’m wondering if it’s a better use of weight to carry a liner (I get colder when I sleep as opposed to when I’m even sitting in camp awake).
So I was looking, naturally, at the $80, 4.5oz Vapor Barrier liner that Western Mountaineering sells, and thinking it may feel like sleeping in a space blanket: functional but not very cozy (yup, I do know that VBLs are functionally different than most liners). I then looked over at the Mountain Laurel Designs Body Bag liner, at $55 and 3.5oz. a pretty sweet deal…but wondering how much that would push the bag’s comfort level. Silk doesn’t attract me due to lack of insulating goodness and fleece is too heavy (temp-wise and weight-wise) for where my sleep system is headed. Although I could pack another piece of clothing for this weight, it’s my lower body that gets colder most of the time (seems to be a common topic here on BPL these days).
Anyone have experiences using either of these liners (or any others, for context) with success in a down sleeping bag? What are the comfort and moisture levels like? Or is bringing an insulating garment at possibly 2x the weight more functional and more comfortable?
