A few months ago (or more), someone mentioned the Daiso dollar stores and the UL bargains they might have. I got around to visiting the one in Seattle and had a ball. It is more like a $1.50 store…

An 18cm stainless steel bowl 70g/2.5oz. It measures 7" across the top lip and 2-3/4" deep. For reference, an MSR Alpine bowl is 3.6 oz./102 g and 5.5"/14cm, and my favorite SnowPeak bowl is 5.5" high x 3" deep and 1.6oz. At $1.50, I think it is in the running. Caveat: it is much smaller on the bottom (3"), so less stable as a pot. Lots of potential for stove building/windscreen material.

A pack of "kitchen paper" filter media, with 25 papers that are 16cm/6.3" across and weigh all of 0.6g/0.002oz each. They have huge potential for water pre-filters and are big enough to rubber band over the mouth of a Nalgene.

I got two little stainless bowls with plastic lids in the hope that one lid might fit my Ti pot. One is 12cm/4-7/8", 75g/2.6oz and the other is 10.5cm/4-1/8" and 60g/2.1oz. Of course both have storage and cooking/dining potential.

I also found a foil "kitchen guard" that is 70cm/39cm (28"x15") and designed to be used as a three-section folding spatter guard for a stove top. It is "heavy duty" aluminum foil with corrugations and perfect for wind screen material and MYOG pot lids. It is thinner stuff than the typical roaster pans found in a US grocery store. The whole thing is 35g/1.2oz. I'll be using some to make a lids for the SnowPeak Ti and the stainless bowl.

In another store I found a 10" bamboo spoon that is 1.1oz. It has a broad shallow bowl and has good potential for cooking in coated pots. This one is a Joyce Chen product and easy to find. Inexpensive at $3.25.

Yes, I have two stores in my area. That's where we found the tiny aluminum teakettle that weighs 2.6 ounces, or something like that. The two stores sold out of the teakettle within a couple of months.

The tea kettle was on my list to look for. None to be had. Daiso advertises 90,000 products and the Seattle store is small.

Great store. Is the bowl the one with the clear plastic lid with rubber ring around it? Thats a nice weight.

I haven't been in a while, I think its time to make a trip!

The stainless steel bowl? Just a plain bowl with a lip. We call them "dog dishes," which they work very well for.

The others are small bowl-shaped storage containers with snap on lids like Tupperware.

I went to a local mall, which I rarely do, and found another Daiso store [[[[shudder]]]]…

I got one of the teapots, which is 2.8oz and holds 500ml. It looks like a good match for the Super Cat alcohol stove at 4-9/16″ wide and the stove will fit inside. I could save a few grams by removing the handle and using a wire bail, but it is so darn cute :) Testing with the Super Cat stove will commence.

The new find is a whole line of stainless steel mugs. I got a 500ml one that is 3oz for $1.50. 3-7/16″ outside diameter and the same in height. It has a nice rolled steel handle. It came with a flaky steel snap hook that I removed. The size is perfect for a Ti Esbit stove.

Yes, I studied mine the same way. A few grams could be saved, but not much. The handle is kind of useful. A portion of the spout could be removed also, but not enough worth going after.
