I thought I'd share a find of mine today. I found a black plastic coffee cup at work today in the office. Well, I picked it up and it felt super light. Took it home to weigh and here are the results…

.8oz
cup

1.8oz
cup2

That is a 1 ounce savings over the GSI cup. The cup is very durable, resists heat and doesn't warp. Holds 8 ounces, which is perfect for a cup of joe. They are made by a company called WNA and they are supposed to be disposable. I found a pack of 8 on Amazon for $9.69 shipped.

I had been contemplating what to do about a cup. I had been carrying around a GSI, but it is heavy and I have been going with just my ti-pot. However, wine doesn't taste as good out of a ti-cook pot.

One could argue that wine is not ultra-light. Whiskey is closer, but wine tastes better to me after a long hike.

snap off that useless handle to save .0016 ounce.

ok, all kidding aside, that looks useable. I will trade you 2 of them for a bright orange indestructable spork, plus 2 small sized Heat Packs for your footbox.

I love it. I strive for UL, but I find that there are certain creature comforts I enjoy on a hike lasting less that a week. Coffee in something besides a Fosters can and not slurping Scotch out of the palm of my hand. I'll accept the weight penalty and live like a king (as long as someone else carries the Scotch).

I tested my cup at work with some coffee and very hot water from our water dispenser. I've squeezed and flexed the cup to a good extent with no ill affects. Once the temperature rises in the coming months, ill test it on the trails. I have now doubt it'll perform great.

If all you want is to drink your whiskey from a UL cup, various hotels have transparent plastic cups in their rooms where they are used as water glasses. They weigh between 0.3-0.6 oz. You can probably find them commercially as party supplies. I find they are pretty durable. You can use a marking pen to put volume measurements on them so they double as a measuring cup.

I used a small styrofoam bowl for awhile. Not that durable, and not that easy to clean.

I have used this cup for two years. Fairly light at 0.5 ounces. It has some insulating ability also. Not too exspensive either.
Phili cup

But no handle.

Hey I just thought I'd share my find. It may not be the lightest cup. But for someone that likes the comfort of drinking out of a cup with a handle, it's great.

The lightest cup is no cup!

Seriously though, my dad will be glad of your findings. He's always looking for a better/cheaper/lighter/tougher solution to the problem of cooking breakfast while enjoying his cup of coffee.
