I've been experimenting with various waist belt materials over the last couple of years. Here's a picture of one using my current favorite, polyvynal (beer can provided for scale):

This belt weighs about 4 ounces, uses a 2" quick release buckle, 2" nylon web ends and 1/2" nylon barbed Ts for connection to the carbon fiber pack frame. I taped and sewed the prickly edges with adhesive backed insignia cloth.
The belt fits me well (conical shape helps) and is as comfortable as my padded belts. The mesh allows air in so it isn't as sweaty as my solid padded belts.
