I got an Inova Microlight at Target for $6.99. It has a hi/lo/strobe function, uses two CR2016 coin-cell batteries and can be opened by prying off one side. I can pry it off with my fingernail, but any small knife blade or even a ball point pen will do it. When it is opened, all the electronics stay put– the LED and swtich parts remain in place, so you aren’t chasing parts in the dark. The stainless steel retainer clip is great.

I just bought it and I don’t have any idea of battery life. It is bright and has a decent light pattern. It is a bit larger and heavier than the Photon’s. I’d say how much, but my scale doesn’t have the sensitivity– in other workds, not enough to matter much.

Here’s the manufacturer’s specs:

Dale, which department in Target would I look in to find one of these?

Looks worth a try!

Thanks

I’ve brought a red Inova Microlight on my last couple of trips. It was useful in camp for reading, looking at the map, and sorting gear. The weight (without the clip) is 8 grams on my scale.

I got 0.4oz/11g clip and all. I like that clip! It would be nice if these lights had a little hood over the top of the LED to keep the stray light out of your eyes. I saw one custom variation of the Photon light with a little barrel to take care of that.

For me, I prefer the Photon’s very lightweight swivel clip. You can clip the LED light anywhere — even right on your shirt — and position the beam at almost any angle.

REI charges a ridiculous $19.95, but the same LED’s are widely available for half the price. Here’s an Ebay seller where I purchased mine from — with reasonable shipping cost.
