I was thinking about picking up a pair of Marmot Scree Softshell pants. This will be my first pair of softshell pants. Something to use for winter hiking in the NC mountains, playing in the snow around home (snowed 3 times so far this year) and on the occasional ski trip. I was really wondering if they will be sufficeient for resort skiing? Also looking at the REI Mistral pants. Any other recomendations for under $100?

I have not used the Scree pant but they look like a good all around pant. I have the Patagonia Simple Guide pants and like them a lot. Basically the same pants but the Scree do have ankle zips if that is important for you.

I have them and like them a lot so far. I've used them on hikes with just long underwear on underneath and have been comfortable to 20 degrees if I keep moving. They are also real comfortable and seem pretty water resistant. I don't really have anything to compare them to because this is my first pair of softshell pants.

I've owned these pants for a couple of years. Thing I like: slim fit, lightness, thinness. I layer long underwear under them (either capilene 1,3, powerdry, or wool depending on the conditions) They work great for snow activities if you couple them with a gaiter. They are unlined so don't offer too much for warmth by themselves if temps get around freezing. They have pretty slim openings by the ankles though, and though I havent tried it, I would suspect that they might not fit around ski boots. The ankles do have enough stretch to accommodate single layer mountaineering boots. I can check if they will fit my plastic double boots, which is closer to ski boots. I'm not a skier though and have never tried ski boots on…only seen them on my buddies, so keep that in mind
