I am looking for a hooded down jacket built for tall people. I am 6'4" 175 lbs. I looked into montbell, UL down parka,(too short) and Rab microlight alpine jacket (arms good, waist slightly too short) and eddie bauer 1st ascent down hooded pullover (doesnt work), and am looking into the western mountaineering flash (currently shipping). I will be using the jacket on the PCT this summer so weight is a concern I would like it to be 13 oz or under and am not sure if there's any other place to look. Feathered friends is not an option as well because their lightest down hooded jacket is 18 oz. If it is highly recommended I would consider the patagonia down sweater (15oz), but I'm not sure about it. If the answer is stop looking and just pick the best one I'm ok with that and it'll (pending WM Flash) be the Rab microlight in size L, I'm just curious if there's an outfitter that I missed and could take a look at.

Thanks for the advice!

I didn't see it so I called and was told there is no tall for that item. thanks for the thought though!

Before Christmas, I went to the REI in Albuquerque, NM and tried on the Mountain Hardwear down jackets along with the Patagonia jackets.

I am 6'2" and weigh 210 lbs. FYI, a large Patagonia Down Sweater fit me ok, and the XL worked ok too, but with more room. (http://www.rei.com/product/770806; medium weight = 11 oz.) On the other hand, I needed XL for the Mountain Hardwear Phantom jacket. (http://www.rei.com/product/803156; medium weight = 15 oz.)
Also, I tried on a Patagonia Down Sweater Full Zip- Hoodie in XL and it fit just fine for me. (http://www.rei.com/product/787067; medium weight = 15 oz.)

Since I am still recovering from Christmas expenses, I am waiting until I have the funds to make my purchase. My first choice is the Patagonia Down Sweater.

YMMV.

Regards,

Steve

You could contact phdesigns.co.uk and ask if they'll do a custom Minimus or Ultra pullover. From what I hear, they're more cooperative if you phone than if you e-mail.

It's an expensive option though, especially from the US.

Nunatak will custom one of their down pullovers to whatever you want. Not cheap, but wonderfully made and quite light. It’ll take you a couple of months to get it, so order early.

Toby, I'm 6'2 and 175, I have the EB First Ascent Down Sweater in a large-tall, it is almost to "tall" for me(the same one in Eric's link). It should fit you perfectly and it would be great for the PCT (not overly big).
I also have a MB UL inner w/hood in a XL and it doesn't fit nearly as well as the EB FA sweater.
They also had it for sale last year, late spring for a killer deal.

At 6'4" and 205 lb, with a long torso (22.5 in) and sleeves (36.5 in), I've done well with anything Patagonia (XL or XXL), Merrell Raven (XXL), and Nunatak (as suggested above, custom-sewn with an extra panel at the waist.

I'm not tall myself (5'11") but often buy stuff in tall- I'd rather have sleeves be an inch too long than too short, and like to have enough length that shirts stay tucked in through many crouches, lunges and bends. EB's tall sizes, at least the First Ascent stuff, is genuinely tall, rather than an inch longer in the sleeve and torso to the point that I sent it back and got the non-tall versions.

Toby, what's your chest size and arm length? I have a first gen First Ascent jacket in Medium-Tall that's just a tad too snug against my lat muscles so it's hanging in the closet. My chest is 44-45in.

Not sure if you've actually tried it on or are just looking at the specs, but for what it's worth I'm 6'6" and I find that the XL MB Down Inner Parka fits me fine.

– Steve (and other patagonia endorsers) I went to my local store (small) and the only patagonia that they had was XL and it was too big (chest) so I may look around for an L size or just order one and take it from there so that I can compate.

-James and Douglas – those options look great but I'm probably not in the market for jackets at those prices… great idea though I appreciate it and another day and ill jump on that!

-eric I was looking for a hooded jacket, but if fit really does not work for any of the hoods ill consider that because obviously a well sized jacket will be more functional.

– Richard ill have to make it to a patagonia carrying store (not too many in upstate NY)

– Aaron, thanks!

– Jared – my chest size is about 43-44 for a jacket, arm length about 34-35 inches. Id be worried about the jacket being too short on my torso but if i saw all the measurements Id consider it. I appreciate it. If you want to PM me or just leave it on this thread thatd be awesome.

– Bryan – I did actually get a chance to try on a MB down parka and the L wasnt long enough sleeved and the XL was too baggy in the chest etc, im pretty lanky so that may have been my downfall for montbell. thanks though.

I think for hooded I am going to look at the two last options, the WM flash and Patagonia Down hoodie. otherwise it seems EB (hoodless) down sweater M or L tall is a good bet. thanks for the help guys.

I'll add a +1 for Patagonia. I have a Down Hoodie (the old pullover version) and a Micropuff pullover, both in size Large, and the sleeves are pretty close to long enough (and that's a good thing compared to a lot of other brands!)

I would go with a Cabelas down jacket in a tall as they are about the only ones with a decent price. Not the lightest but decent. No one really makes a good down jacket in a tall size that is priced well.

I have noticed as of late though that the GoLite stuff tends to have a really athletic fit so a XXL for me fits like and XLT so that might be an option for you.

I have one of these too, size XL, and love it, but (1) it's not an outer garment (not enough down) but a layering piece, and (2) it's short – just comes to my waist. If its sizing is typical of all MB down jackets, though, a true outer jacket from that company would probably work.

I'm 6'3" and 210lbs. I have the Patagonia Down Sweater in size Large and the length is perfect, but it is too baggy in the chest for use as a single layer. I can easily fit a nano puff and fleece under it.

So based on the large amount of tall people suggesting the L patagonia Ill have to try it out. I just came across this jacket which I think is relatively new, the Sierra Designs Gnar at 11.5 oz is pretty good for a hoodie. Anyone heard how this jacket is/how the fit is, the size chart claims decently long arms at 35 inches for a large.

Toby, BPL did a review on the Gnar recently, however the article is member access only. In summary though, they said the following:

"Overall Rating: Above Average
Sierra Designs gets it mostly right in designing their new Gnar Down Sweater. It meets our expectations for a lightweight multi-purpose three-season down sweater very well. Thanks to its lightweight components, its overall weight is low, considering the number of features it has. However, the jacket could be a little warmer and would benefit from an extra half ounce of down"

Toby, I measured the First Ascent jacket and yeah, its chest is probably too snug for you too.

For the edification of everyone else, here are the measurements for the size Medium-Long:

– Inner armpit to armpit: 21in
– Sleeve length: 36in
– Back collar to tail: 33in
– Back collar to front edge: 31in
– Front collar to front edge: 28.5in
– 3in collar
