Hey everyone! I'm sort of stuck, looking for a pack to buy.

I recently decided to buy a smaller pack for weekend trips (as I only had a Deuter 40+10, and an Osprey 60). I decided to buy the Mountain Hardwear Scrambler, and I received it last week. Everything fits, and the pack seems great, I just have a tiny problem. I can't fit enough food for a week + water + my filter in there. So now I'm going to return the pack and look for one a little bit bigger. I really liked the Scrambler, just wish it was around 35 liters instead of 28 :

I'm usually really gentle with stuff so this will be an all around weekender pack (three days max).

I was looking at the GoLite Peak bag, but I'm not sure about frameless packs. I like to hike pretty good distances, but my gear weighs in at about 15 pounds (not including water), so I'm not sure if frameless will be an issue.

I'm just really not knowledgeable about this sort of thing yet because I've only used backpacks with frames.

My budget is <$80 (definitely willing to buy used)

My plan atm is to wait for the REI garage sale at the end of the month, but if I find a good deal before hand, I'll definitely do that. (Saw a peak bag on gear swap last week for a good price, but by the time I got my paycheck it was sold : )

Anyways, I appreciate your help guys and gals! :)

The REI Flash 30 comes to mind, but I can't imagine doing more than a SUL weekend with it. BTW, the GoLite Jam has a lot more room for just a few ounces more than a Peak.

Frameless packs are okay for a 15 pound base weight for an overnighter/3 day, which should come in around 21-22 pounds with a couple liters on board. Most models and most hikers find them bearable up to about 30 pounds, but the lower 20's is more like it. Study the loading techniques using a sleeping pad to add structure to the pack— using it as a tube with your gear inside. Some frameless packs use the pad in a sleeve against your back. There are a number of UL/SUL packs with frame stays, but good luck getting one for $80 or so.

James,
It sounds like you are a perfect fit with a GG Murmur. 36L size, 20#load, light duty construction. I do not have one. But, I have several GG packs.

The previous pack in this series was the GG G5. I have two of these. A really nice pack if you are carefull with it. One of mine (the spinnaker version)is a bit worn out. That's how much I liked it. I also gave a sil-nylon version to my daughter. We took it out for a couple weeks this year, to Baxter Park, ME. The pack is larger than spec…just do not overload it. I am guessing the Murmur is about the same.

The cost is about $90, though.

You shouldn't need a frame in a pack carrying only 15 pounds. The peak has a foam back panel that provides padding and helps it keep its shape. If you are interested, I have a new with tags Peak that I am willing to sell in your price range, just send me a pm.

I second the Golite. I have the 2010 Pinnacle with improved hipbelts, and I have carried up to 26lbs with it. Carrying extra gear for the group. With a little tweaking of the straps, quite comfortable.

I appreciate all the input and PMs.

I'm going to give some serious thought to all of these packs (GL Peak, GL Jam, MLD Newt, GG Murmur, REI Flash 30 [although this one is too small I think]).

Thanks for all your help, I love this forum :)

Thanks Brian, I'll PM you sometime this weekend if I decide to go with the Peak! :)

Finally decided to go for the GL Peak bag. I think it is exactly what I was looking for afterall. Thanks for all the advice, specially about using my sleeping pad as a cylindrical frame! :)
