Picked up a SS#7 at the montbell store in Boulder for $117. For a summer down bag I couldn’t pass up that deal. At worst case it will be a spare for new UL hikers. The bag weighs 15.9oz as sold with 5oz of 725 FP down. Older no zipper model which is fine with me.

My first impressions are good. Fits me just perfect (I’m 5’11” and 155lbs). It’s got surprising loft next to my supposedly 15deg Marmot. The stretch system is pretty neat. I bet my wife will like it a lot. It’s a claimed 50deg bag but I can sleep at 50degs in just my clothes and bivy so I’m guessing it will be good down to 40 for me. Maybe down to freezing with my bivy and all my clothes on.

Going to cut the lower cord off since my feet go to the end anyway and replace the top with lighter stuff and a mini cordlock. It stuffs into my patagonia micropuff pullover stuff sack pretty easily. I’m sure you could go smaller but I doubt I will need to. I can get a bag this size with my clothes food and vest for 2-3 days into an REI flash pack.

Anyway here’s a couple pictures. Just thought I’d share my cheap UL find.

At least one reason the Montbell bag will look lofty is due to its fabric not being flat. The ounces of down will tell the story there. Good find though.

Looks good, Christopher!

Is your bag standard length or long? The standard is supposed to be good to 5’10”. Do you feel like you are touching either end when stretched out?

I’m 5’9″ so the standard bag is ‘perfect’ for me. Yes, one of the very first thing I did was yank out the cord near the foot end and sew the two openings shut.

Separately, I added a note to you down at the thread by Verber titled “MontBell Down Inner Jacket Now Has a Zipper”. Wonder if you saw it?

Bag is standard length not long. I’m just about touching or am touching depending on how tight I have the hood done up. It doesn’t really bother me though. The regular length bivy is the same way, *just* big enough for me. My wife is 5’6″ and she has plenty of room. I’m building a “Bill style” down quilt so I really don’t *need* this but for the price and having an extra bag for my wife, friends etc I couldn’t turn it down!

I’ll go check out the other thread. I think I noticed the note but forgot to reply.

I was a bit confused whether this new No. 7 bag is for you or your wife. If it’s for your wife, you might not want to yank out the cord near the foot end, as it may be beneficial to her…

Haha well it doesn’t really have a purpose. I suppose I can just replace the way too big cord with a smaller one or make her deal without it. See once my new custom bag (sewn by my wife’s aunt) is done, I have a feeling that one for my wife and a two person version will be soon to follow. :)

Sorry if you already know this…

The “foot cord” (for lack of a better term) allows the user to tighten or close up entirely the bag’s bottom 4 or 5 inches. Given your wife’s 5’6″ height, that might be the perfect fit for her?
