I like to read in my sleeping bag at night, but in the winter my hands get cold unless I wear bulky gloves or mitts, and then I can't turn the pages. Someone suggested I use the Kindle app on my ipod touch since you just have to swipe the screen to turn the page. Problem is, the screen won't work with gloves on. I see that North Face has come out with a new liner glove with X Static fabric in the finger tips in order to solve this problem, but it's $40 and I have a drawer full of gloves already. Would an X Static sock liner work? I recently threw out the only one I had.

Anyone willing to try this and see if it works? Any other ideas?

That's fantastic. Thanks Eric.

I don't think it was the point of the video, but I noticed the guy just use his nose–not a bad idea for someone lacking MYOG skills.

I wonder if that stylus has to be in touch with your skin? I just tried an aluminum tent stake with a glove on–no dice.

on the kindle app for android you can change the volume button on the side of the phone to switch pages,

not sure what app you read with and what not but that may work.

Somewhere on the forums Miguel Arboleda gave a link for making your own stylus.

That's good to know about the android. I was considering getting one. I really don't want my e-mails following my everywhere I go (especially into the wilderness), but I just might have to join the modern age.

Since I'm using the ipod touch to read, there are no external volume or other buttons, so I doubt that would work. Bummer.

Thanks everyone for the great ideas.

Dealextreme–wow. US$3.88 inc shipping from Asia to Atlanta. Even if the stylus is virtually worthless, that really is incredible if you think about it.

The flip over fingers on gloves sound good, but would probably be a pain flipping back and forth. And my delicate digits might get chilled ;-)

Again, thanks everyone. Solid suggestions all around.

What makes the stylus work? A plastic tip? If that is the case, just use the handle end of a plastic spoon…multiuse.

I'm probably wrong on that ; ). The pogo stylus seems to have some other material on the end.

I can't find my own forum post and link so I'll just say that the iPhone touch screen works by the electrons that pass between your finger and the screen. You can use anything that conducts these electrons… your finger, a metal pen (aluminum doesn't work very well), thin plastic wrapped around sponge that has been dipped in salt water, or even, as is popular in Korea, a plastic wrapped fish sausage (the salt makes it work). The thing to remember is that there must be nothing blocking the passage of the electrons. And the tip of the 2appendage" must be at least a fourth of an inch in diameter. To protect your iPhone screen it is naturally better to use a soft tipped "appendage".

Re: "I must be old fashioned, because I still use my nose when i have gloves on."

Get with it man! That is so old school:-)

"Leave the thing at home!"

Excellent advice, Dale! I like to read, especially on long winter nights, but I really should just make do with a paperback. I can't believe I'm actually carrying a Steripen these days AND even considering bringing another device into the mountains. The horror.

The negative end of your spare battery (AA, AAA) works as a stylus. Put a piece of tape over the end to prevent scratching.

Hi,

Not sure if mentioned above but I bought some conductive thread on ebay for a few euros and sewed in to my liner gloves.

Works well for, also got a small styus for the phone to use when wearing mittens (tied it on to the phone)

Cheers,

Stephen
