I saw this thread on my local trip report forum (Portland Hikers), and thought it’d be interesting to see the results here as well.

My statistics are pretty pedestrian having just begun backpacking this year, but not for lack of trying! I was shocked to realize I spent 25 nights backpacking this year, 30+ including camping at places like Zion where I just did day hikes.

Let’s have your:

  1. Total number of backpacking trips
  2. Total nights
  3. Total mileage
  4. Total elevation gain
  5. Best hike (and date)…why?
  6. Best picture?

Here’s mine:

  1. 23 trips
  2. 25 nights
  3. ~ 288 miles
  4. ~ 47,000 elevation gain
  5. A three-day, two-night loop around the North and Middle Sister in Central Oregon. There’s no trail through the pass between South and Middle Sister, requiring a cross-country, ~ 5 mile hike to find the PCT waiting for you on the west side of the mountains.

Total number of backpacking trips: 23

Total nights: I'd be surprised if I didn't pass 300.

Total mileage: around 3,000

Total elevation gain: hah!

Best hike (and date)…why? CDT SOBO, June 14th-November 4th, because of the freedom, the consistent beauty, the exercise and the friendships.

Best picture? Too many to decide. Below is a good one.

I am a farmer so all my trips are in the fall and winter, which puts me in the middle of my hiking year, so here is Nov. '09-Nov. '10

Total number of backpacking trips: 6

Total nights: 17

Total mileage: ~240

Total elevation gain: who knows

Best hike (and date)…why? Upper Paria River/Hackberry Canyons loop, early Nov., great scenery and solitude, went 7 days without seeing anyone.

Best picture?sunrise near yellow rock

I don't keep up with numbers, miles, elevation or anything like that.

Best hike: A 3 day trip in July in the Grayson Highlands. I met up with a thru hiking buddy and it was great to be back on the trail with someone that I can keep a good pace with and talk. Old trail friends in the perfect place: on the trail!

Favorite picture: Sunrise on Grassy Ridge in the Roan Highlands.
