I’m confused! I’ve been trying to get a hold of this book….been to his site and everyone says it’s out of stock. What’s the scoop? It seems like a great book, I wonder why it went out of publication.

The trailblazing book was written in 1999. Even though the philosophy and approaches of lightweight backpacking are timeless, much else have changed — sparked and spurred on by the book itself.

If you want a copy, your best bet is Amazon.com.

Steven:

I’d like to buy your book if it’s still available (i.e. if John isn’t interested). I’ve read bits and pieces of it but never systematically.

John:

You’re the one who started this thread and you’re the one who’s been looking for the book. As implied above, I think you should have first dips.

Steven mentioned to me that he will ship the book on Monday. So, if you are interested in this book, Paypal $12.50 ASAP to me at:

btangemail AT yahoo DOT com

IF I receive your money by 5 pm PST today (Sunday), then I will email Steven and confirm with him to ship the book to you instead. After 5pm, the book is mine. :)

Last chance. Going, going…

Ben or John if anyone one of you two still need a copy I will sell it for the same price so not to undercut anyone. $12.50 and I have paypal.

I bought the book from Steven, but passed it on to John because I felt that he should have first dips on it.

But yes, Ken, I am still interested in getting this book. Email sent.

I’m curious: what book is this? I have Ray Jardine’s “Beyond Backpacking” and “The Ray-Way Tarp Book”, but I don’t see any books with “Ultimate” in the title.

To the best of my knowledge, Ray has written four books, but only “The Ray-Way Tarp Book” is still in print. It’s available only from his website, http://www.ray-way.com/tb/index.shtml

The other books – and I’m lucky enough to have all three:

1992…..The PCT Hiker’s Handbook

1996…..The Pacific Crest Trail Hiker’s Handbook, 2nd edition

2000…..Beyond Backpacking

Good point! The book I have is “Beyond Backpacking”. Hope that is what John wants.

Hmmm… very interesting.

Anyway, in my email’s to Ken, I specified “Beyond Backpacking” — so hopefully, that’s what’s coming to me!

Beyond Backpacking is the one I wanted and I am receiving. Orginally I stated that the book was not published anymore and wondered why. But, you reaised a good ?. It all worked out GREAT.

There is also the long-out-of-print CDT Pocket Planner as well as the recent adventure narrative, Siku Kayak. The bibliography is on the author’s home page.

A thirty second search on amazaon revealed that beyond backpacking is still alive and well and ready to be bought for under $15.

Crazy Pete:

Yeah, I saw 3 under $15 — then a bunch of used ones listed at $69 and $70! Wonder who are these crazy sellers???
