I just got back from a trip to the Uintahs and figured I would try a new sock system. I used REI Merino Liner socks, skinny plastic bags for vapor barriers, and Smartwool Mountaineer socks over the bags for insulation. I had technical mountaineering boots over everything because I needed crampon compatibility. I have NEVER had problems with blisters before this trip. On this trip we skied in about 10 miles and then back out. By the end of the last day I had two blisters on my inner left ankle and tender spots on the bottom front of both feet. I didn't bring any tape or moleskin because, like I said, I have NEVER had issues with blisters on my feet before. I have had the boots for years and never had issues. I really think it was the new merino liners that did it. In previous years I just wore the smartwool mountaineer socks and took a lot of spare, dry socks. This is the first year I have experimented with vapor barrier liners to cut down on the number of spare socks I need to bring. On previous ice climbing trips this year I just wore the VBL next to my skin and never really had much issue, but figured I'd give the liner socks a go this time around for potentially more comfort. Is merino prone to causing blisters? Would coolmax be better, or should I just forego a liner sock? I would appreciate any input. Thanks.
