I have been using a BB hammock for a while, but am interested in also having a ground option. I am wondering if it is possible to use the Shangri-La 1 Nest along with the tarp I use for my hammock. the tarp is 112" long, and 60" on each side. It's a cat cut, hexagon shaped, diy tarp.

I'm thinking I can just incorporate 2 poles, guy lines, and the Shangri-La for a cheap ($75) ground option if trees won't be available.

I don't see any reason why this wouldn't work, but wanted to double check before I bought it.

Does anyone see any potential problems here?

I use a setup very similiar to this with no issues, I run a ridgeline under the tarp and then suspend it accordingly. SL-1 nest with now an Equinox 10×12.

Sure, no problems. I use a Go-Lite Nest-2 under a Eqinox 10×12 with the wife in tow.

I think the bigger issue is whether or not the hex shape will provide enough coverage for the ends of the nest.
Remember that when your hammock is under the tarp, the bulk is towards the middle.
You might look up the specs of the SL-1 nest and then set the tarp up in your yard at the approximate height you would be using it at and check it out.

That said, if it's really coming down, you could lock down the tarp and just use the nest as a groundsheet because the bugs won't be much of a concern in those conditions.

Hope that helps.

+1 to what everyone else said- apologies for not getting back to you on your last reply!

Main thing will be whether the size/shape of the tarp will cover up the SL1 nest. I’d do what Jacob suggested- get the measurements of the SL1 nest and try mocking it up.

If you wanted to spend a wee bit more ($90), you could get net tent from Bear Paw Tents, like the Pyra Net 1. Half the weight of the SL1 nest, similar square footage, etc. If interested, I’d John at BPT and give him the dimensions of your tarp- he could tell you if the Pyra Net 1 would fit and could tailer it to fit if it didn’t- make one side all silnylon, etc. I feel like I’m starting to bring up Bear Paw and Kooka Bay every other thread- just an idea. :)

After sketching everything up, the SL2 (leaning toward that one since I'm 6'3") ends would stick out a bit. The sides of my hex tarp that are parallel to the ground are 73". Each side of the tarp is 60" wide (120" total across), and it's 144" long. The SL2 is 90" long, 52" wide and 49" tall at it's highest point.

That would leave 8.5" at each end. It's just the corners of the SL2, and that shouldn't be too bad in most conditions since the tarp is a lot wider and longer than the SL2. It's possible that a storm with really strong winds could cause problems here. I'll have to double check the angles when the SL2 arrives. I could make a lightweight cover for one end of the SL2 that would wrap around the corners a few inches and hook to the far side, or rig my rain jacket up to cover one end if the weather gets ugly.

Either way, I'm going to try it out. Worst case scenario is I have to make a rectangular tarp. That's pretty easy to do, and I could probably use one anyway.

Any other ideas are welcome.

Thanks again.

Webster, if you're 6'3", and the sides of the tarp at the ground are only 73" long, it seems you would be pushing that tarp even without the nest and sleeping diagonally…

You can bring a ground cloth and use the hammock as a nest.No need to bring an extra nest.
