Hi,
I'm new to backpacking. I have a 65 liter pack, and I'm looking for a pack liner. I found one that's 50 liters.
I'm wondering if there is any conventional wisdom regarding the size of the pack liner as a function of the size of the pack itself.
Am I losing 15 liters? Or does it make sense to have a smaller pack liner, because not everything needs to be dry – pots, plates, etc. can sit outside the liner.
Thanks,
Dan

As far as your question goes that seems about right. However what i have done (with GG Mariposa) is just use a trash compactor bag, cheap, light and reusable. Another thing to keep in mind is that with a 50L pack a lot of times they are counting for any external pockets as well. So if you have pockets on the outside then you probably don't have a main compartment that is 50L, but I could be wrong.

Hey Daniel,

Keep in mind alot of companies actually under-rate the size of their packs. The best way to figure out the size is to measure the circumference and the height. With this you should be able to determine a size that will work.

Good Luck

also for many of us, using a slightly smaller pack liner makes better sense- I only need to keep my sleeping bag and packed clothing in it- my sleeping pad, "kitchen", etc doesn't need waterproofing- nor my food that is stored in ziplocks (within a spintex sack)
