Greetings,
Our son, 16, is 6′ 8″ and may still grow another 1″-2″, we estimate. He needs a bag/quilt; I need ideas.
Requirements: synthetic (I doubt anyone can talk me into down), at least 35F, and ideally no more than 2 pounds.
Here’s what I’ve done so far:
1. Our son sort of fits a 6′ 6″ bag if he ignores the hood. So, one option is a bag without a hood – but it’s tight.
2. I googled for, but did not find, an even longer bag. Presumably there are companies that will make a custom bag; I didn’t see them or look extensively (because it sounds expensive).
3. Maybe a bivvy would help us “fake it” with a 6′ 6″ bag. Or, I’ve heard some folks use a child’s bag for their legs and a jacket for their torso.
4. Liking the idea of quilts, I searched this forum for previous conversations about them, but short of checking each one in detail, I didn’t find anything relevant to my need.
5. So, I checked out several quilt sources. Nunatak was one, but way out of our price range. Also, in the Reader Reviews here, someone says “Kudos to Don Johnston who put the basic design concept in the public domain”. If that means the design is free somewhere, I couldn’t find it.
6. Fanatic Fringe (www.fanaticfringe.com) makes quilts. I got a so-so impression from their web, but did leave them a query.
7. I happen to like the Jardines, and would like to go with their quilt kit.
A problem is they, in an effort to limit customer support load (which I can understand), discourage / prevent any contact (email, phone, US Mail, etc.) except short questions concerning existing orders.
Anyway, I know some of you have made their quilts, so I ask you: Will their long quilt kit accommodate our son’s height, or, say 6′ 10″ leaving some room for growth?
Their web describes the long version: “Our 1-person quilt kit is for someone no taller than 6’1″. If taller than that, please add the 1-person Long option to your order.” However, I can’t find the dimensions of the (1 person) kit’s cloth & insulation to make a guess.
If you have any advice at all, replying here is fine or feel free to mail me at davidmenges@gmail.com. Thank you very much.
