Years of weight training, curling. aikido, hiking, and walking has left me with big, muscular calves. This has made it hard for me to find a pair of gaiters that fit.

I’m looking for a pair of lightish gaiters for four season hiking and occasional snowshoeing. Mostly day trips in the winter. Full-length mountaineering gaiters not needed. DWR’d nylon or poly is OK, as are more breathable WPBs like eVent or Paclite.

I’ve tried on all of the gaiters carried by local stores and have struck out completely:

OR Rocky Mountain Low Gaiters L/XL
OR Rocky Mountain High Gaiters XL
OR Cascadia Gaiters L
Outdoor Designs Perma Event Gaiters L

Some measurements of girth/circumference taken over base layer + pants:

Below knee: 17″
5.5″ below knee (largest girth): 20″
Above ankle, above top of boot: 14″
Around ankle/heel with boots on: 18″

For hiking trips, I’ve used homemade Tyvek gaiters as well as a pair made from a pair of shredded DriDucks rain pants. Both leave much to be desired. I’ve been doing a lot of hiking right before work or over my lunch break for the last year and would like to find something more durable and breathable, and doesn’t make me look like a hobo as I come in to work…

I would look for the older style gaiters with elastic top and bottom, they look like they are a lot looser then newer styles.

I have pretty big calves from bike riding a lot and the OR crocodiles on just fit.

have you thought of posing this question to outdoor research and see what they suggest?

I have 23" calves and have had discussions with an OR sales rep, they just don't fit me. I'm actually thinking about seeing if MLD will make a pair of custom gaiters. Even with a custom fee, I think they would be cheaper than the pair of OR Crocs that are sitting in my closet never used.

Actually, no- it hadn’t occurred to me more than as a passing thought. I did think to ask MLD about it, but haven’t sent the email yet- if their larger sized eVent gaiters wouldn’t fit, perhaps something bespoke could be made for me.

How would you suggest I ask? Just call Customer Service? I’m not holding out much hope, as I don’t think they even make a jacket that fits me IIRC…

Michael: Ah, drats. If you ask MLD anytime soon, I’d love to know how you make out.

My MLD LightSnow Gaiters, size Large are tight on my wimpy 17" calves, while wearing very light pants.

Good to know. Bah. I guess I'll have to stick with my MYOG Tyvek gaiters until I find something custom…

Aaron,
I love the eVent! My legs are dry at the end of the day.

E-Mail Ron with dimensions. He is great to work with.

Aaron,

I hope to get some money from Santa, since my wife knows better than to try and buy me something. So after Christmas I'm going to call them up. I see that they have a $10 custom charge and we'll take it from there and I'll let you know.

Mike
