Hey guys,

I’ve been trying to plan a good 4 day hike for Jan 16-19 and can’t really decide with route I want to take. It will be a good friend of mine and his newly acquired gear along with myself and my UL setup. I took a trip with him to Linville Gorge not too long ago and he kept up even in wet and cold conditions. I positive 15 mile days would be no issues whatsoever.

The issue comes in our 4 day time frame we are located in Charleston, SC and don’t want to drive more than 6 hours. I was thinking the foothills trail since I’ve completed it in 4 days already and enjoyed it thoroughly but I don’t know if my partner can push that hard for 4 days. I also was thinking the Art Loeb but it seems like something that would be easily knocked out in two days. Then lastly I just would kind of  piece together a route in GSMNP involving alittle AT and side trails to make a loop or good route since I haven’t hiked much there.

I’m open to insight or completely different suggestions for this weekend. Appreciate all the input!

Grayson Highlands is nice.  You could patch together a nice loop that would kill 4 days in some of the southeast’s best hiking.

Slickrock Wilderness is just southwest of the Smokies and has some really nice terrain and a lot fewer people.

If doing the Smokies, I prefer the Big Creek trailhead.  Its a nice part of the park.  It has quick access to some elevation along the AT.  The ridge that goes up to Mt. Sterling is nice too.  There are plenty of loop options.  For some reason, it doesn’t seem as busy as other parts of the park.

Grayson Highlands are probably what I’m going to go with. Been planning on seeing Mount Rogers for awhile had just forgot.
