Headlamp recommendations

even if it were heavier the functionality gained would make it worth it. This mod makes using the power sucking high beam a no brainer as I know how long the usable light will last (not to mention it has a 3 stage power gauge on the unit). Just happens to be a side benefit that you do not have to throw anything away. At my going rate I figure I will probably charge it 5-10 times this winter. Once March hits and the sun comes back out I am guessing a single charge will last me till Fall. Lets just hope it lasts as long as Petzl claims.

I have the new model Black Diamong Spot and I LOVE this headlamp. 3 ounces, uses 3 AAA batteries, It has a very good spot light, and a flood light for around camp and a red light.

Meets all of my needs. Is a perfect all around light if you like night hiking. If your not night hiking, it's overkill because it's main purpose is the spot light.

I feel like such a hack, I just use whatever is on sale on Steepandcheap.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. It's hard to tell which lights are regulated and which are not but the petzl core battery sounds like it might be a winner. I just need to decide on whether I go Tikka vs Tikka Plus or Tikka XP. I'm undecided on whether a red light or not would be worthwhile.

Thanks for alerting us to the core battery. It looks interesting. I have liked many of the features of the tikka xp2 (built in diffuser, battery life indicator, red led) but the lack of regulation was a showstopper. With the core battery it's become interesting.

Temptation… Must resist. I don't need another headlamp.

Ah, I can resist, it only has 2 brightness levels. I really want three: 2 lumens (most simple tasks), 15 lumens (camp, good trails), >=60 lumens (wayfinding).. actual, I like around 100lumens. Ah… I can resist. Wait. I guess the red could be used for the really low light needs if I didn't care about color and 60 is enough for most situations. I better hide my money from myself.
