Hi
Wondered if anyone knew how to compare insulation – I'm looking at a new belay type jacket – and trying to work out the difference between thermic micro (mountain hardwears own I think), primaloft eco, & down. Cheers!

Charlotte,

I've been talking about the dearth of information on real world performance of synthetic insulations almost since I became a member here.

As with any clothing insulation several factors must be compared as objectively as possible with true scientific testing.

The factors needing testing are:

1. Retention of Loft. (How many compressions will result in what % of loss of loft?)Down is the gold standard here.

2. Compressability (Polarguard Delta is the least compressable of the synthetics in my experience)

3. Weight/inch of loft/sq. foot, for ex.
3.a. CLO value (i.e. heat retention – closely related to loft. Again, down is the gold standard.)

4. Durability of the insulation over the years

5. Moisture retention (does it become nearly usless (like down) when soaked?

6. Cost (last but certainly not least)

Probably the U.S. Army's Nautick Labratories have the most info on this topic and maybe European insulation standards, when adopted here by all, will finally shed light on this subject.

Until then I have my own experience to go on.
To wit:
1. Climashield > Good compressability and good loft retention
2. Softie SnugPak > (proprietary British fiber similar to Climashield in compressability and loft retention. Used by Brit. armed forces)
3. Thermolite > (various versions. Great compressability medium loft retention
4. Primaloft > (varrious versions. Great compresability. My 1st generatiion Primaloft has poor loft retention. Newer iterations may be better.)
5. Polarguard Hollofill > (medium compressability, decent loft retention.)

That's my personal take on these insulations. YMMV
