hey guys,

just about to do a 3 week trip to the NZ southern alps for some climbing.
I may climb and love the outdoors, but no way am i a gear freak. i do know however there are tonnes of you out there who would be walking, talking, breathing gear tech encyclopedias and willing to give me advice.

Basically im out there for advice on what you guys think is the latest/best legging's/pants that i would wear under my gtx alpine pants.
Its as simple as that.

Cheers guys,

Siggy.

Softshell. Try the Patagonia Simple Guide pants, or if you can find them, the Mont Bell Strider pants.

softshell non membrane … stuff like double weave, schoelle dryskin/dynamic, etc …

membrane softshells dont breath as well so are for much colder temps

talus pants are good. for under shells tho dont do soft shell, you'll sweat to death and it wont escape the layers of fabric

I have found that MH Tufstretch is better than Schoeller Dryskin after comparing a pair of Mammut Champ pants to MH Winter Wanderers.

The Mammut was a much better fit for me (32 inch waist, 34 inch inseam) but the Tufstretch was just as stretchy as the schoeller, breathed a bit less but had higher wind resistance and was TOUGHER by far.
I rock climbed in the Winter Wanderers almost exclusively for three years- the knees finally gave out this past August. I have destroyed heavy cotton pants and other softshells in days on our low-angle, sharp rock.

I ice climbed in them a number of times and found them to be great for that as well- took a DWR nicely and never impeded movement. For the money, they are a terrific softshell pant.

I am getting the Sarpa pant to replace my Champ pants for winter activities, provided they fit well enough.

Edit: I do not like the pockets on the Winter Wanderer. The thigh pocket is bulky and closes with a snap- so it is not very secure. I also do not like the open hand pockets, but I suppose they give the pant a casual look.
