Does anyone know of a brand of trousers with zip-off legs but WITHOUT the side ‘cargo pockets’ ?
I’ll stay calm and not express my hatred of them but feel that all or most manufacturers feel obliged to put them on.
How many empty pockets do we need?

Not sure if you are looking for new britches but I am selling a pair of like new pants. I have one pair of The North Face Tek-Ware Convertible pants which do not have cargo pockets. Size large, color khaki/tan with zippered ankles with a snap. Includes the belt. Cost $20.00, buyer pays shipping.

I could see a side pocket on the Montbell pants though it was small and discrete.

If you can find the discontinued Mountain Hardwear Siesmic pants, they don’t have cargo pockets.

Backcountry Outlet has a bunch: http://www.backcountryoutlet.com/outlet/MHW0154/large/c11/s41/Mountain-Hardwear-Seismic-Convertible-Pant-Mens.html?swatch=SEIKHA

Sierra Trading Post has a few sizes on sale (32, 34, 36): http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/,21876_Mountain-Hardwear-Seismic-Pants-Convertible-For-Men.html

Bob Ward’s has a few too: http://www.bobwards.com/bobwards/servlet/item/features/84832-11

If you have decent eyesight, buy a cheapie seam ripper, and you can easily remove any pocket that is sewn on top of the pants (ie..not sewn into the main seams. Cargos usually are not.)
You just have to be careful to only pop visible threads, not the fabric. And voila! You can wear almost any brand ;-)

I find that I like to keep my map and often my camera in the right cargo pocket on my pants but never used the left so I did just that, I got out the seam ripper and removed the left pocket. I also removed the covering flap and pocket portion of the back left pocket which I never use either. I then sewed that shut and now have custom hiking pants.

Thanks for that.
I was thinking about removing the pockets but wondered if there would be signs of damage on the pants.
I never believed there would be
but then again, if I did it without checking something would go wrong.

If you remove pockets from older clothes, you might see a difference (from fabric fading), but if new, and the fabric wasn’t sandwashed or had some other stupid trendy finish, by all means it should be just fine when you remove the pockets.
(You can look inside the pocket to see if the fabric is a different color.)
If you see small needle holes after you remove the thread, they usually close back up after you wash or rub the fabric gently!
