I picked up a plastic tablecloth tonight that is thin embossed material and a 48"x88" example weights 3oz/85g. This is the type intended for single use for parties. It seems to be fairly tough for the weight. There are other sizes as well. This one was just $1.99.

I think they have potential. I don't need one that wide, so it should be about 2oz cut down.

Anyone else tried one?

I have used them for car camping to cover picnic benches. Even with this "lightweight" use, they do not last long.

try it and let us know … even if you only get a season's use out of it it's only 1.99

just make sure there are pretty flower patterns on it ;)

Mine is black, but when I looked on line there were all kinds of comic book and other themes for kids. Spiderman ground sheet anyone?

Can't hurt any to give it a try!

Used them at family and community functions. They have some stretch and give but not much of it, and they tend to puncture easily, even tearing on the edges of tables.

Do these have some stretch, or are they made of a hardier plastic? We may be thinking of a different kind of cheap plastic tablecloth.

This is a thin stretchy stuff, not what we called "oilcloth" which is a vinyl fabric with a fleecy underside that my parents used for car camping table cloths.

I'm thinking of this on the level of a painter's dropcloth or even polycro. It's not going to last long. I'm going to check out a couple party stores. I'll bet there is a 50%-100% variation in this stuff.

Just don't get the kind which *looks* like a picnic tablecloth. A bear might mistake you for a table-top snack! :-o

I've only got one night on a tablecloth groundsheet so can't speak for durability. In fact, the one I slept on was identical to the red/white one in the above picture and I was in fact sleeping on top of a picnic bench. Luckily, a bear did not mistake me for a tabletop snack. Not kidding about the last, this was at Lake Wanatchee WA and the same weekend a guy was mauled by a bear outside his home very close by.
