Hi All,
Long time reader, first time poster. I am trying to make some good choices for my upper-body winter insulation system, and was hoping for some guidance. I apologize in advance if this gets a bit long and rambling, but I’m just trying to give all the information I can.
Situation: I’m looking to do some Winter backpacking in Ontario, Canada, expecting low temperatures to be in the -10C to -20C (15F to -4F) range. I’d like to be reasonably comfortable when sitting around or doing light work at this temp range. Being fairly skinny I sometimes get cold kind of easily.
Decision to make: I’m trying to decide what my “main” insulating piece(s) on my upper body will be, without spending too much money. That’s where your advice comes in.
(Relevent) Gear I currently own/can bring:
-Capilene 2 crew neck (base layer)
-Capilene 3 zip neck (Mid? layer)
-MEC Light Fleece shirt

-Merrell Conductor Primaloft One jacket (60g insulation in sleeves, 110g insulation in body). For reference, I think the arms are about the same as the Patagonia Nanopuff and the body is about the same as the Patagonia Micropuff.
-Arc’teryx Theta AR Goretex Pro Shell
So I’ve had the above gear for long enough to know it won’t be warm enough for me personally, sitting around at the temps I’m considering. So, I recently bought a North Face Nuptse 700FP Down Vest
This vest has a lot of loft, and seems to be stuffed pretty densely with down, although they don’t publish the actual fill weight so it’s hard for me to compare warmth. The collar has lots of down in it and really hugs my neck like a thick down scarf. HOWEVER, I just bought this vest recently and could return it if I change my mind, because: I’m wondering if I wouldn’t be better off with a down jacket or parka, which would (hopefully) allow me to leave my Merrell Primaloft jacket, and maybe even my fleece shirt, at home, simplifying my layering.
On my budget (spending <$200 for this main piece of insulation), I’m considering swapping for the MB Frost Line Parka or maybe the MB Alpine Light jacket or parka. Such a swap would save me weight, and some fuss, but at some cost, and would also not make good use of stuff I already own like my primaloft jacket.
So, what are your thoughts? Should I just stop worrying about it and stick with what I have (I do really like the Nuptse vest, and it has a lot of down in it in the important core and neck areas). Or do you think I should return it and spend more to get a down jacket or parka? Would I be warm enough in either of the Montbell options mentioned over just my base + mid layer? Any other good options?
Thanks all!
