Hey Folks,

I'm looking for a lighter rain jacket to replace supplement my dead bird for those fast and light days.

I can get the patagucci rain shadow for a decent price from MEC (Canadian REI) … i prefer to buy from them because of their no hassle guarantee.

Was wondering if anyone had any experience with this jacket or pata's H2No layer?

Breathability, durability, waterproofness, etc … also is it helmet compatible

Or any other fairly cheap durable breathable sub 13 oz rain jacket with pit zips and helmet compatibility.

I'll be using it for fast and light alpine.

Thanks Guys and Gals

I have it but would rather have a Houdini for the weight savings. Breathability is not good but there are huge pit zips. I have worn mine with a DAS parka for some winter backpacking and it performed well.

I just posted an initial review of this jacket – definitely worth considering.

It is my main hiking rain jacket. Works good for me. The hood has a drawstring around the back, so you can dial it in for skull or bucket :)

Durability for climbing? It is light thin stuff. Not for rubbing on sharp rocks!

Marmot Precip is another well vented lightweight. Again, not really tough stuff fabric. You know the game: light or tough, not both.

yeah i need something waterproof

ill be wearing a light soft shell anyways … just need a light WPB

Im also thinking of the precip, NF venture or some other el cheapo fairly light jacket that i can just tear apart

thnks

I have had this shell for 3 years now, and it is a really great piece of gear. Strikes a nice balance between lightweight and being more robust than something like a Marmot Mica.

Eric,
I have used a Patagonia original edition 8.5 oz (XL)Specter pullover(sewn, not welded, with slightly heavier fabric than the later version with the kangaroo pocket) with H2ONo for over five years with no problems – no breakdown of the DWR coating, no wetting out from condensation inside. Note-the weather was always 60 degrees or below. Has occasionally felt a little clammy when the weather was around 60 degrees and I was doing a lot of uphill with a pack. In cooler weather, a gem. A poster from Hawai bought a similar one from me and found it sweaty, so not for a tropical climate.
May buy the Montane eVent Spectre when it comes out, if it is a long jacket like the Specter, but nothing else out there would be worth retiring the Specter, IMO.

I've got a TNF Venture Jkt and while not the lightest thing, it's been bomber for me thru quite a few years of use. It's my day-to-day & motorcycling rain jacket. It's been through some intense all day rain storms on the bike without leaking a drop.

The ideal jacket for your use might be the Marmot Super Mica with it's pit zips and reinforced shoulders for only 8oz. MSRP is similar to the Rainshadow at $200. It depends how much weight matters for your intended use. The Rainshadow is likely more durable.

i think ill see if the rainshadow will work, it seems to be somewhat durable and with not too many issues

failing that a NF venture or marmot precip will be the ticket if i can get one on sale for cheap

question dan? … how much does yr venture weight? .. ive seen varying amounts online … also is it helmet compatible

thnks

My medium TNF Venture weighs 12.36oz. The hood is a little small for a helmet. It works okay with a lower profile helmet, but not so good with a typical sized helmet.

Eric and Canadians, Atmosphere is having 20% off November 10-13th. If there are any venture jackets, precips or even Arcteryx left.

Rob Owens, ACMG guide who used to work for Arcteryx, now works for Patagonia, uses the M10 or the Rainshadow if he needs a beater jacket.

eric what type of helmet? a BD half dome is alot harder to fit in a hood than a tracer or a Camp armor.

i think ill just get the patagucci at mec, i can get 10% off that day

I think you will find that pretty much all of the name brand non-eVent jackets have about the same breathability during use and that the pit zips are just something that you will need. As you go north of 70F a wind shirt is just a better idea. Mountain Hardwear also makes the Quark 2 might might be an option.

I am also selling off a TNF Diad with pit zips in an XL which weighs 9.5oz and is very durable for pretty cheap.
