Anybody use alternatives to the heavy pole to hang the hex 3 from? I do not and will not use hiking poles. Any carbon fiber replacements? Hanging from trees is generally easy? Or maybe a big ol branch layin round?

Or hang it from a line strung between two trees. Use a trucker’s hitch to winch that line tight, and then tie the top of the Hex to that line.
These folks make carbon fiber poles with plenty of options.

note: I haven’t ordered anything from them yet, so no input on quality.
just curious… what is the main reason you wouldn’t use walking poles?
I enjoy walking more without having to hold something.
I’ve not had much luck finding well-placed, stout overhead branches. I hike in the Sierra, so other forest types might be more accommodating.
The beauty of the overhead line is you have the full use of the Hex floor, but it has to be really stout to get a tight pitch. A line stretched between two trees has far too much give, in my experience, to be a viable option.
In a wooded area I’ll bet you can find a useful branch to substitute for the center pole, noting that you can prop it on a rock if it’s a bit short.
if you have an old carbon fishing rod around you can jimmy 2 poles up by using a similiar technique the authors used in the BPL review.
we use a similiar system for our walking poles
