Is this thing actually water PROOF not just water resistant? If im in a downpour for days on end, wearing a pack, is this thing going to keep me totally dry?
Yeah, hyvent is water proof. People love this jacket for its weight. It lacks in breathability though
I would say in regards to breathability my Triumph is on par with most UL waterproof shells I've owned. What it does lack are venting options, which in my opinion affect it's effectiveness as an all-day waterproof shell option.
I've had really good experiences with HyVent being waterproof. I've got another North Face rain jkt (Venture Jkt) that uses the same Hyvent DT membrane and it's performed wonderfully from a waterproof standpoint. I've ridden my motorcycle across the country with rain nearly the entire time and the jkt didn't let any through. Some membranes (ie. Sierra Designs) won't hold up to much pressure but if Hyvent can handle rain hitting you at 60-70mph for days straight then it's definitely going to hold up in a backpacking application.
From a breathability standpoint, it seems normal…which is mediocre. I don't find any waterproof/breathable shells to really breathe that well. I haven't tried an eVent jkt.
i like mine. got it on ebay for $60. I wear it with a tee inside when it is raining and i am hiking fast and it keeps me dry. when I get to warm, I can open the zipper. It is a very light and waterproof rain shell. I dont have to complain about breath-ability yet.
