I'm working my way up to making my own hiking shoes. I'm not there yet, but here's my first pair of shoes:

For the sole, I used a pair of flip-flops with the straps cut off. For the materials I bought a green nylon skirt and an orange fabric placemat at the thrift store. I sewed the materials together with my sewing machine and used hot glue to glue the shoes to the outside edges of the flip-flop soles.
For a pattern, I used an image of the shoe that was worn by the Bocksten Man who was found in a bog in Europe. The orange trim was my own addition to both provide more stiffness in the heel and provide something to glue to the sole.
There are lots of shoe patterns here:

My hope is to one day make shoes that have no raised heel, no arch support, wide enough for my duck-shaped feet and good traction. For now, these shoes are very light (not sure the weight, but feels the same as crocs) and I could probably use them for camp shoes. I don't usually need camp shoes, but there are some hikes I do where it's nice to have them.
