I'd like to throw in my check lists for day hiking and multi-day trips. They are generic lists as reminders, not gear specific. Of course there will be items on my list that you wouldn't take, but I'm very interested in other items you might include.

Please note my "apres hiking" section. I have a little kit in the trunk that makes returning to the trailhead more comfortable. Having things to eat and drink, to clean up with, comfy shoes and warm dry clothes, can be a real treat. Experience pays off– like trailhead toilets with no TP. Not bad things to have when traveling by car anyway.

    Day hiking checklist:

( ) Note to trusted person on destination and return time

    ( ) Pack
    ( ) Trekking poles

    ( ) Water container(s)
( ) Water treatment (chemicals, Steripen, filter)

    ( ) First aid kit
    ( ) Spare personal medications)
    ( ) Lighting (headlamp, flashlight)
    ( ) Spare batteries
    ( ) Knife
    ( ) Whistle

You didn't post any weights on your list, making it pretty hard to offer any insights. Remember, this is a LIGHTWEIGHT backpacking forum.

    I started a thread titled:
    Suggested GEAR LIST ETIQUETTE

It's supposed to be a checklist, Mike :) If you must, imagine that each item is the lightest version available. The idea is to make sure you get to the trailhead with all the toys you need, to avoid arriving at your campsite and finding that you left the tent stakes behind. Like the time I got to the top of the hill with visions of kung pao chicken dancing in my head, to find that it was laying on my workbench at home and I had tea and a granola bar for dinner. BEEN THERE? DONE THAT?

It would also be nice to hear about the little niceties that others take along. So, Matey, what's in your wallet?

    Expanded food checklist:

    ( ) Dehydrated dinners
( ) Breads (bagels, pita, sandwich thins, rye krisp)
    ( ) Pasta
    ( ) Instant oatmeal
    ( ) Sugar packets
    ( ) Dried fruit
    ( ) Cookies
    ( ) Granola bars
    ( ) Candy
    ( ) Hard cheese
    ( ) Beef jerky
    ( ) Instant rice
    ( ) Couscous
    ( ) Top ramen
    ( ) Hot chocolate mix
    ( ) Tea
    ( ) Coffee
    ( ) Drink mix
    ( ) Scotch

Actually a checklist is a good idea, so you do not forget something. I have a spreadsheet with all my gear, and check items I will be taking, and then it calculates weights for different categories. It is good to use so I do not forget something.

Dale, you can delete the first item

    ( ) backpack

I doubt anyone would forget this item :)

I did, however, forget my boots one time!

Yes, I doubt anyone would forget the pack, but how do you make a list without it.

    What would you add?

Heh heh, Mike does have a sense of humor… I mean he meant it as a joke, right? :)
