Often I make my own teriyaki beef jerky. Often i take it hiking with me as a significant protein source. However, i tire of having it stuck between every tooth while im hiking. Is there a meat substitue for beef jerky that is less likely to get stuck in teeth and can be dehydrated? I don't want to substitue for a grain, as meat has so many amino acids.

thanks

shredding seems preferable as it dicing would still mean a bunch of chewing. What do you shred it with?

I used to do beef that way by cutting it cross-grain with a sharp knife, then putting the small pieces into a food processor.

Mini food chopper. My most used appliance in my house! Mine is an electric one from Costco.

Btw, you can also get jerky 'snuff' that is a fine powder at c-stores.

If you have a Mexican food department at your grocery store, look for carne seca, which is dried, shredded beef. It may have flavorings in it – check the ingredients. You wouldn't want to be surprised on the trail by a sudden attack of hot chilies!

My dehydrator came with a gizmo that extruded spiced ground beef into jerky-like strips for drying. I only made the jerky once; it was a long time ago but I don't remember it being stringy.

I always figured jerky was supposed to be multi-use gear: nutrition and electrolytes now, and hours of diversion after as you worry it out of your teeth.

I eat a lot of beef jerky when hiking/BPing– I wouldn't even go on a dayhike without dental floss. Nothing more annoying than having something stuck between your teeth. I'd take floss before I'd take toothpaste!

I had forgotten about that pork stuff. We sold it when I worked for importfood.com – it came in tubs and was a fine powder overall.
