I am looking for a lightweigh mug that does not break the bank. I typically backpack in groups of 2-3 so I usually use a cookset of some kind. I am not looking for a $40 titanium mug for cooking purposes. I currently use a blue with white speckeled paint mug, the ones that they sell everywhere for about $3-$4. It is not insulated at all. What are some other choices for me. I like to drink coffee in the morning before packing up, and don't like for it to get cold. I have been thinking about wraping it with aluminum foil and putting duct tape over it, not sure if that will help though.

My lady and I use plastic cups we got on a plane flight. Semi insulated with plasticised card. 16g each.

If you want to keep your existing mug, you can find a small piece of Reflectix, form it around your mug, and wrap it with duct tape to hold it together. One local hardware store stocked it and sold it by the linear foot.

If you don't need to actually do anything in the mug other than drink from it, you can go to a grocery store or the dollar store and pick up one of those cheap coffee travel mugs… they are insulated, light, cheap, come with a somewhat working lid, and usually come in many sizes.

These measuring cup mugs work well I find. I started with the insulated gas station kind thinking these would be too small. But I eventually got one with some other stuff and now I prefer it. Not too small for me and because it’s plastic it insulates quite well. Anything plastic will insulate far better then a metal cup. (They usually cost < $1 too btw.) They’re also almost weightless.

You won't get much lighter or cheaper than a polystyrene foam cup and they're insulating too.

+1 on the REI measuring cup at 0.6 oz. I use it with the BPL Ti 550 cook pot…What else do you need when going solo? Things change when I go with my wife and son are with a larger group….

If I am gonig to carry an extra cup I agree the old green scout cup (REI) that weighs .6 oz is the best regardless of price. This thing is light, marked in 1/4 cup units, has a handle, is cool when drinking hot liquids and the bonus is it is under $2. That being said its big draw back is you can't cook in it. I would also prefer this cup to be 12 fluid oz instead of 8. If anyone knows where to get a 1.5 cup version please let me know.

I found that a small paper coffee cup from Star Bucks fit in my .7 liter REI boiling pot. In the morning half the water goes to coffee or tea the other half to make oatmeal. If I am out long I put two cups together with the cardboard band. The Soto stove goes in a zip lock inside the cups. I drink twice a day and can go for a few days like this. Very cheap and very light. Replaced when leaking.

The REI insulated mug is the same as the one Aladdin makes and runs about 5oz and hols 12oz. I cut the handle off one, more to save room than weight. Having a lid is nice to keep the bugs and conifer needles from "flavoring" your coffee. I've used them for years. I'd love to see a lighter version of the same.

I want to try a GSI Infinity mug, which is 3.2oz and holds 17oz. $6 at CampSaver.com.

I use a Rubbermaid TakeAlongs Twist & Seal 16 oz size. Without the lid: 0.7 oz.

Handling by the rim works for hot stuff, but I also made a 1 inch-wide CCF band for it which I used sometimes.

If I take a cup it's usually the one from the Fozzils folding solo set:

The cup holds about 11 oz and weighs about 1 oz. Folds flat so I can always fit it in somewhere. Makes a decent bowl for cereal too if I don't feel like eating from an annoying plastic bag.

I dont have a scale handy but we have a few of those
rubbery collapsable measuring cups- seem fairly light
and would be easy to pack…
I dont mind drinking hot stuff outta a plastic soda
bottle and hold it with my sleeve over my hand or a sleeping
sock.
