is it ok to spray some water resistant stuff onto silnylon or will that mess it up? i’ve got an old poncho that could use a little more water resistance.

Do NOT try to put a fluorosilicone onto silnylon. The two different chemistries are simply NOT compatible! You could try the Atsko SILICONE Waterguard spray.
