this is how we officially communicated during my friend's predicament.

What was happening is that neither his wife, his ex wife , myself and his many friends were getting much sleep for a few days.
We communicated privatly too , (I know both his wife and ex wife…) still we tried to keep others informed.
In the meantime both here in Australia and in Anchorage the papers were flooded with comments like yours, and worse. That did not help the situation at all
particularly because his wife was not that familiar with his abilities ( special "army" training) nor an "outdoor" person herself in this sense.

So I am trying to get you and other people to understand what certain uninformed comments can do to friends and relatives

Thank you, Franco, for an excellent post. It is definitely NOT appropriate to make any critical comments whatsoever while the search is going on, for the sake of the family. Eric should have waited until all the facts are known!

Unfortunately, the media are quite prone to publish completely inaccurate information and never follow up with the facts, so more often than not, we never know just what happened.

I just wish that media websites would not accept comments from readers (many of whom evidently can't read!) in this type of situation!

You can still get eaten by a bear with the right gear…
you can still fall to your death with the right gear…
You can still die of dehydration with the right gear….
You can still have a heart attack with the right gear…
You can still die of a blood clot with the right gear…
Your body can fail you in a million ways with the right gear…
You can still get lost with the right gear….
You can still break a leg and die with the right gear…
You can still die from crypto/etc with the right gear…

So many things can go wrong, for eric or anyone to assume they know what happened is just PLAIN DUMB
