My wife complained that my backpack reeked, even after washing with detergent and water. She had me try a product called Febreze. “It’s what frat boys spray on their floors to get rid of barf smell,” she said. It seemed to work well. Has anyone else tried it?

When Fegreze first came out, it long distance hikers jumped all over it – in the vain hope that they could deodorize their packs. It might possibl maybe reduce the odor somewhat, but the only thing that really zaps trail stink is McNett’s Mirazyme. It was developed to clean the funk out of wetsuits. It will definitely knock out the pong of shoulder straps.

Vain hope is correct. What you can end up with is, a pack that retains most of the original pong, combined with some chemical company’s weird notion of “flowers and spring”. It is not pleasant.

A couple of things to try:

1) Freeze it overnight. This should kill the bacteria causing the odor and remove the funk smell. But, beware, if you don’t wash the body oils out of the pack somehow, they’ll grow back and the pack will again remind you of your last hike.

2) Try washing the pack with Win Detergent. I’ve had great luck with this product getting the stank out of polyester work-out clothes. (disclaimer: I haven’t tried it on a backpack. And, check the care instructions on the pack for washability.)

Cheers,
