At the book store at Little Yosemite Valley at the Visitors' Center:

History of the Sierra Nevada by Francis P. Farquhar

Its short chapters on various topics of the Sierras make it very readable. Examples: Indians of the Sierras, Big Trees, John Muir and the Range of Light

    From the back cover:
" Farquhar (1887-1974) was a renowned mountaineer. former president of the Sierra club, and author of several guidebooks to the Sierra Nevadas. Mt. Francis Faraquhar in Kings Canyon National Park is named in his honor."

Published at Berkerly, 1965. (University of CA Press) He taught there.

I also recommend the fantastic Laws Guide to the Sierra Nevada. Such a beautiful book!
