Hi everyone,

First time poster here, so sorry if this has already been covered…

I'm looking for a hard shell that would work well in multiple scenarios–long (over 2 week) treks and climbs at decent altitude (sometimes in cold, windy, and wet conditions), some kayaking, as well as climbing. Activity level will range from moderate to intense, so breathability is definitely a concern.

I've looked at some eVent and Gore-Tex shells:

ID thru hiker, Arcteryx alpha/theta, Westcombe specter LT, cruiser LT, mirage, revanant

But I've never owned any of these expensive awesome looking products so I'm not really sure which offers the right mix. I'd say that my first priority is versatility, followed by weight.

I was hoping that someone here could offer some wisdom as to the quality and performance of the shells I've mentioned (or any other that people like!) and maybe an opinion on which would be the most versatile and durable.

Thanks a ton!

I have experience with a North Face Point Five, which is a Gore-tex Pro Shell, Arcteryx Stinger also Pro Shell, and my wife has the Westcomb Mirage which is eVent. All are top notch but I would say that the eVent fabric has better breathability. If I find a great deal on a eVent jacket, I'm getting one for myself.

I agree, a light eVent rain parka is my next major purchase – maybe an REI parka.

I've owned and used both fabrics extensively (Arcteryx GoreTex and Rab eVent). The Rab Bergen jacket I have is far more breathable and comfortable than the GoreTex I've used, lighter too!

The Rab Drillium is a lighter version in eVent.

Thanks so much for the replies, everyone.

So it seems that eVent is the superior choice–what do you guys think about particular eVent shells?

So far as I have heard/read, the ID Thru Hiker, Rab Latok Alpine seem very well reviewed. Anyone with personal knowledge of how the Latok compares to the Thru Hiker? Also, the Westcombe jackets seem quite good, but a little heavy. Worth the extra weight?
