I have been in contact with MSR in regards to an ongoing issue with a tent I bought. Here is the response:

"Thank you for contacting Cascade Designs, Inc.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble with you tent. We had a bad batch of rainfly material and it looks like you purchased one of those. If you would like to send it in for a replacement with another one of our models, please send me your address and phone number so that I can issue you a Return Authorization."

Great customer service. This is due to the 2 man tent I have is no longer made. Given the choice of 2 man MSR tents, which would get your vote?

Regards,
John

MSR Kilo ?
Is that a new one ?
Bit of a bummer that Easton has the same name for one of theirs.

John
Better if you tell us what you had or what you like..
That is :mostly 3 season, four season, front/side entrance, weight or size…

Oops, that is Easton. How about the Fast Stash? Well, maybe not. I like the configuration, but it needs lighter fabrics to make it really appealing.

Franco,

Great idea! I have used a golite hex 2, Golite lair /hut tarp, and a missing link (the problem tent)

I liked the missing link the best for livability and fast set up. I have not used a free standing tent until recently, a hubba bubba, so I do not have the experience to know what I like. I like being able to set up a tarp shelter without having a wet interior to deal with. (a learned skill I guess)

I do think the I want the lightest shelter that is robust enough to handle the Rockies. I looked at the carbon 2 & Hubba Hubba HP. The space seems the same, tight to me, but the Hubba Hubba HP seems more ready to tackle severe weather because of the pole set up.

Regards,
John

MSR just announced a new shelter at the retails show a couple weeks ago that is basically a second generation of the missing link. I'm not sure when it's available, but you may like that.

That is the winner! Thanks fort he heads up. I got off the phone and I will be shipped a Fast Stash in Jan 2011 , of a Hubba Hubba in late Sep 2010. I just have to make the choice now.

John

If you are considering 4-season use or weathering alpine storms, I can heartily recommend the Hubba Hubba HP. It's bomber and mine is 4lb even plus stakes. It's luxurious for one and comfy for two, three pads across will just fit if you squeeze.

I would get whatever one you think will be better for you, regardless of when it is available. If you are going to be camping between sept and jan, then perhaps you can borrow a shelter in the mean time? If you don't want the Hubba Hubba, I wouldn't get it because it's available sooner.

Hi Dan,
Thanks for your input. I am not worried about having to wait for either tents. I have shelter options currently, and I don't winter camp, so no big deal there. It really is a tough toss between the 2 tents.

John

Well, I think the HP models are particularly nice. I have a Hubba Hubba HP which is my do-everything 2-man tent: 4-season, any elevation, any weather. 4lb is a screaming deal for that kind of versatility, especially in a two-door two-vestibule tent.

I have a Mutha Hubba in the non-HP version. It's a LOT of netting, which makes me less likely to use it in the winter or in the alpine. I have used it in the winter with just a footprint and fly, and it does do that well, but I'd hate to ride out a mountain storm like that.

The Hubba Hubba is very comfy with two doors and all the venting options. If you like that, it's probably worth the weight. If you think you'll find yourself leaving it at home because of the weight, then it's probably best not to buy it at all.

+1 on the Hubba Hubba HP.

It seems like a great tent – very versatile and good for taking a partner. It would be a much more capable shelter for inclement weather, especially above tree-line and the solid inner holds in a bit of extra warmth ta boot.

If it ends up not suiting your fancy, plop it on the gear swap for the price of the Stash and pick it up when it comes out. Win-win.

I would see if they would send you a cash refund. There really isn't any MSR shelter that comes close to UL.

I just bought an MSR Hubba Hubba HP 2 from Ultralight Outdoor Gear UK in Britain. They have a really good sale right now (the tent is about $400, down from $450… but you might have to consider the terrible American exchange rate right now, if you’re buying from the US), plus carry the Europe-only light green and down-to-the-ground fly version.

I know, I know… not UL. But my partner won’t go camping with anything else. I think this will make her very happy. And the weight is not terrible. The size is quite a lot more generous than people here have so often said.
